Adrian Peterson became the first Minnesota Vikings running back to lead the National Football League in rushing, but it still garnered him only three votes for NFL most valuable player.Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning won the award, announced yesterday, for the third time, with 32 votes. Miami quarterback Chad Pennington and Atlanta running back Michael Turner each received four votes, while Peterson and Pittsburgh linebacker James Harrison each received three."Manning is definitely worthy of that award," Peterson said yesterday, two days before the Vikings host the Eagles in an NFC wildcard matchup. "He's an outstanding player, and I tip my hat to him. ... When I come into the season, I set goals for myself. Hopefully they come along the journey through the season. If not, then hey, just focus on what's in front of us. I'm hoping to get that opportunity to try for that again."

Sad to say but Peyton (not a big Peyton fan) is not a bad choice of MVP. Until he was completely healed the Colts sucked. Peterson shouldn't feel upset about losing the MVP since he almost fumbled away the Vikings season at the end. Ryan took away the lime light away from Turner in Atlanta. Harrison, come on a defensive player. Pennington should have won it being able to take a one win team to the playoffs the next year and his stats aren't that shabby either.

I do not concider a person who fumbled so much going down the stretch should even be in the running. A MVP does not do that plan and simple. You can run for 200 yards a game but if you turn the ball over at the wrong time and lose games and your team wins other games in spite of you. He will be known now for Fumbling for along time now and defences will be going after him even more because he is now known for it.

At least he's not whining about not winning. Becoming the first Viking to lead the league in rushing isn't exactly MVP-type stuff.

Lifelong Vikes fan here but Peyton deserved the MVP. That said, Peterson should have been gotten more votes than Michael Turner. Matt Ryan was as much responsible for the Falcons' success as Turner. I would have voted 1. Manning, 2. Pennington 3. Peterson

And good for Peterson for not complaining about this, unlike that dopey Titan Chris Johnson who bitched about not winning Offensive ROY.

Chad Pennington should have won this award hands down, but his face isn't on every other commercial. Without Pennington the 'Phins don't win their division or make the Playoffs. Without Pennington the QB situation is by commitee, so he didn't throw for over 4000 yards for the ninth time in a row. They need to have a best stats award. I think the Colts would have made it in even if Manning had a sub-par year but he had his usual great year even if he started slowly.

Chad won come back player of the year, of course that means you had to stink the previous you so its kind of a back handed compliment. Manning really played well down the stretch.

Surprised he got that many votes. His team was 10-6 in a weak division, he averaged 110 yards a game and led the league in fumbles. Would love to know the day time jobs of the three who voted for him.

Great season-
he keeps that up- he's HOF bound.......
However- your season was not an 'all-time great' season

Chad deserved more votes and Matt Ryan deserved
more votes for where they led their teams from yast year.

MVP slight doesn't upset Peterson....
and he shouldn't be upset.

Nice to read he was so complimentary of Manning... Reading about good sportsmanship never gets old.

I think everyone can agree he's done what it takes to be champion. Besides, I like his commercials. He has a great sense of comedic timing.

10 TDs, 9 Fumbles is not an MVP season.

January 3, 2009  10:22 AM ET

AD is a beast and a former SOONER, he'll get more opportunities to bring home the hardware!

stay focused AD and cut down on the fumbles and you'll be just fine, keep doing what you are doing!!!!!!

BOOMER SOONER!

Adrian Peterson did not have an MVP season. He was the best running back in football this year, but not an MVP. Read Peter King's story about Peyton Manning's knee surgeries this year and you'll all agree that this man deserved it this year hands down.

January 3, 2009  11:32 AM ET

vikes without AP don't even sniff the playoffs much less earn an appearance, AP deserved more than 3 votes.

The reason why Peterson didn't get more votes? One word: fumbles! He's got a ways to go to be the MVP!

Exactly, he is NOT whining about it. Shows character.

Which seems to be a dwindling commodity in the NFL these days with all the prima-donas that have popped up lately.

GO VIKINGS!!

According to NFL.com the remaining tickets left for Sunday's game must be sold today by 3:30 pm Central time. The prices are: $80, $120 and $160. Who in Minnesota has the money for that?

C'mon former Governor Jesse Ventura, help your former constituents and buy some tickets for your friends.
