Carroll: Sanchez needs clear head for NFL decision

USC Coach Pete Carroll said Friday that quarterback Mark Sanchez should not get caught up in the euphoria of his outstanding Rose Bowl performance as he considers whether to return for a final season or make himself available for the NFL draft. Sanchez was selected as the Rose Bowl's offensive most valuable player after passing for four touchdowns and running for another in the Trojans' 38-24 victory over Penn State on Thursday. "That's the kind of emotional stuff that should not weigh significantly in this decision," said Carroll, who will meet with Sanchez and his family next week.

LMAO. USC wins and falls behind Utah in the polls. They should anyways. We shall see.

USC is a great team this year 50year but who is to say that Utah shouldn't be #1? Without a loss there is no frame of reference and from what I saw last night they can compete (and maybe dominate) some of the "big boys!"

January 3, 2009  11:39 AM ET

Stay, Sanchez - UF wants USC in next year's NCG, and we don't want USC whining about losing too many players from this year's squad. We have most of our guys returning, so stay and give us your best shot next year (of course, I believe you would have been a more worthy opponent this year than OU, but not according to the voters...).

I think they should be number one. Undefeated is undefeated. All else is a computer game. They play a Division I schedule, and beat a team that was number one almost all year in a Big Time Bowl game. What else could they do?

But that was Alabama, in a weak SEC conference (seriously) and they didn't impress with their wins. None the less, Utah was impressive this year.

Doesn't matter how many USC loses to the draft. They'll replenish and have another great year. Can't say that for the rest. Look at LSU this year.

As a fan I would naturally want him to stay and finish what the BCS wouldn't let us finish. However, if the scouts and analysts are right and he is the best at his position this year, then you can't really blame him for going, he has to do what's best for him and his. I think Carroll is right, he needs a clear head to weigh such an important decision; but who knows, according some Sooner fans I threw down with on here a few weeks ago not only is Sanchez not in the top 10 at his position, USC could also do better than him at QB. I'm not sure who with, its hard to compete with one of the best in the nation, but maybe they know better than anyone else.

He should go, and I wouldn't worry too much about the Trojans falling off if he does leave. They just re-tool at SC, not re-build.

January 3, 2009  01:47 PM ET

I hope Sanchez does go and maybe than I will truly appreciate the coaching ability of Carroll. By this I mean, Carroll hasn't had the adversity of having a young qb at the helm yet, and we have yet to see what he can do when he does. If Sanchez does go I don't think Mustain or Corp will be the answer which means somebody else will have to be. Most likely Brinkley a true frosh coming in next year and that is what I want to see. How can Carroll win with a true frosh instead of redshirt juniors always at the helm...Palmer, Leinart, Booty, Sanchez. Just a thought.

Get out.... USC would destroy Utah.... and every other team out there..... please..... everyone talks smack, but USC is the one team that nobody wants to play during bowl season..... the SEC fans are scared to death of them.....

They have two more top grade QBs behind him in Corps and Mustain..... however, I in no way think Sanchez is ready..... he's too emotional and too up and down..... he can be awesome (see second quarter against Penn State) or awful (1st half against Oregon State)..... another year in school would serve him well.....

Sanchez needs to stick around for Sanchez. Sir Robin is right. Next year the emphasis will be on USC's offense, as the defense will be reloading. As long as Williams stays, the offense will be brilliant next year, as opposed to the work in progress it was this year.

Unless something truly unusual happens Florida will be back in the Championship game, and Sanchez will probably have a chance to showcase his skills against Tebow on the biggest stage of all. He will also be a factor in the heisman race. He has a lot to gain by staying, and he does need to develop the level headed approach he did not have the maturity for this year. The guy has mad physical skills, but did anyone notice that he could not lead USC on a winning drive against Oregon State? Yes, they were deep in their own territory and there was not much time on the clock, but Leinhart would have marched that team to a victory. With another year under his belt Sanchez would have had his team in the Bowl Game they should have been in this year.

As a USC fan I'm really not worried. Mustain and Corps both have amazing potential, and Mustain has been throwing to Williams for years. The Trojans will be fine. Sanchez needs to realize he can do nothing but get better if he plays for Pete Carroll for another year.

January 3, 2009  03:25 PM ET

I would like to see both Mays & Sanchez stay, but they both need to look at the big picture and do what is best for their long term futures. For the record I think USC would beat Utah.

January 3, 2009  03:26 PM ET

P.S. Alabama is not as fast on Defense as USC and I think FL would have ran up another 10 points if Percy was playing. Plus Alabama's offense is not as potent as USC's.

I remember USC beat Auburn in back to back years. All Auburn fans I knew wanted to play USC in the national championship the year Auburn went 13-0. I told a guy be greatful that you don't have to play these guys again because that would be three losses to the same school 3 years in a row. Savor 13-0. Gator be cafeful what you ask for because I think USC would beat Florida. Alabama just lost to Utah!

January 3, 2009  03:59 PM ET

Stay and Win a championship or become a back-up on a third rate NFL team! I say stay.

January 3, 2009  04:37 PM ET

Sanchez is a failure of a quarterback by USC standards. No Heisman trophy or national championship. Besides, don't they have another great QB prospect at the #2 spot on the depth chart?

January 3, 2009  05:56 PM ET

USC has been losing underclassmen to the NFL for years and the next guy in line just moves up the depth chart. Trojan footballl will be fine as Carroll has established a program full outstanding recruits.

January 3, 2009  06:44 PM ET

Woulda, shoulda, coulda...No doubt USC is a very good team but a GREAT team would not have lost to Oregon State...period! (For the record I wouldn't call FL or OK GREAT either).

I agree... as much as I'm an SC fan... to lace 'em up each week and go undefeated is a feat in itself regardless of so-called strength of schedule (which reminds me... see: Pac 10 5-0 in bowl games). Utah earned it

You are correct. Coming from Columbus...I am sure you are an authority on failure.
