Miami softens Marve's transfer restrictions

Eugene Marve, the father of transferring University of Miami quarterback Robert Marve, said one of the reasons he wants his son to go to school in the Southeast is because he has prostate cancer and prefers that Robert be close to his family members in Tampa. Robert Marve was given permission to transfer earlier this week as long as he doesn't go to a school in the Atlantic Coast Conference, Southeastern Conference or in Florida. But late Friday night, the University of Miami softened its stance. Instead of barring Marve from going to any SEC schools, he is only barred from attending Florida, Tennessee and LSU.

Fair enough, especially considering they do not have to grant permission at all. When a player accepts that scholarship to play football at a school it is a two way street....He gets a free four year education, they get his football services.

I may be wrong about this but my understanding of a scholarship is that the university has the option to rescind the scholarship. The scholarship isn't necessisarily a gaurantee of four years.
But with that being said, if an eighteen oe nineteen year old kid changes his mind, why should the any school have the right to restrict his choices. Lot of students transfer to different schools. Miami is making more out of this than they need to. Miami comes off looking petty and vindictive.

So what happens to this four year deal if a player leaves for the NFL to make millions. They shouldn't be able to tell him where he can transfer to. He should take this as a huge compliment Miami is scared of him. We live in a free country he can go where he wants when he wants its his education and life.

Since this is America, it doesn't work that way. The school is giving him a free ride to play football, so it's not like he can just up and go to another school on a whim. Sure other students transfer all the time, but those students are usually not getting a free ride from their first school. I'm sure there's stipulations to contracted scholarships.

Can't go to LSU, Tennessee, or Florida eh? Weren't those the only three SEC schools that he wanted to attend?

Leaving for the NFL is different than transferring to another school. That's like being given an offer to go work for IBM in your junior year of Tech school. that's why we go to college: to get a job, and leaving for the NFL only makes a school look good if the player does well in the next level.

Simply not true. Scholarship athletes transfer all the time. Anyone see Ole Miss dismantle TT last night? Jevan Snead. Scholarship quarterback at Florida (Tim Tebow arrives) -> Transfer to Texas (Colt McCoy arrives) -> transfers to Ole Miss.

How about current Florida running back Emmanuel Moody. How about ex-Cane Brock Berlin, just to name a few...

January 3, 2009  10:38 AM ET

Wow,,,Marve, Farve, you can play somewhere else but not in our Conference,(division) . sounds the same. Best wishes for his Father.

January 3, 2009  11:46 AM ET

man bump dat. if the kid wants to leave let him go to wat ever school he wants. are they that scared of him? that he will win a championship his first year in? he gotta sit out neways. and besides he aint gaurnteed four years of football and school. if he wasnt as good as they thought or gets hurt then they would pull his scholorship

January 3, 2009  11:52 AM ET

If any of this had anything to do with his family and all, then he would stay at Miami and compete for the starting job. The family issue has not changed since 2003. To throw that out there as a hardship now is reaching a new low...The truth is, he wants to start, is only the second QB at Miami and wants to pick his next school. Miami U. has the right to do what they are doing. It is a common practice. They are being generous. This is the first time the kid has had a coach that holds him to standards. Too bad.

January 3, 2009  12:13 PM ET

As a gator, I don't really care about this player...but I still think its pretty petty of shanon to do this. I guess its more fuel for the rivalry he is clearly trying to build.

January 3, 2009  12:15 PM ET

I am wondering how much of this whole issue is about a kids is not responsible, a university which is having some identiity issues and a father who is reluctant to let his son accept the consquences of his actions. If cancer is an issue than why not have the studnet attend a small NCAA double A or NAIA school near their home.

I feel sorry for alll involved.

January 3, 2009  12:25 PM ET

Some of you don't seem to get it, Miami just like any other school wants players they give scholarships too for 4 years. If they seem like a place that just allows players to transfer whenever they want without consequence after they were shopping themselves around, then that will be come a bigger problem down the line. It's not petty Randy Shannon has 80+ kids he has to look out for, and you have one kid who doesn't want to compete and wants the job handed to him instead of earning it. This happens all the time, so I am not sure why everyone thinks it's petty. Xavier Lee wanted to transfer to Miami from FSU and Bowden wouldn't let him do it. Some kids are granted unconditional releases like Jermaine Mckenzie who is leaving Miami to play with his brother at Memphis. Very legitimate reason, but Oh I am not starting anymore and you want me to compete, I will just leave instead isn't a good reason.

he should try south florida, georgia or ole miss

January 3, 2009  12:49 PM ET

I have no idea why he doesn't go to South Florida and get this whole saga over with. If I am not mistaken Grothe is a senior next season meaning that Marve is the man once his redshirt season is over.

The restriction on Florida schools (except the Gators, of course) have been lifted, so just go home to Tampa and end the damn story.

January 3, 2009  12:58 PM ET

Maybe he should quit being a d|ck and try being a ****! Just sayin.

That or UGA.

January 3, 2009  12:59 PM ET

The kid has a choice. Miami can't stop him from transfering, they're just limiting where he can go if he wants to retain the year of eligibility. Everyone needs to take a deep breath and understand that it's not like he's being denied the chance to go to school somewhere else.

If anything, he's being just as petty as Miami is. He has other opportunities, but is unhappy because he's being limited.

I know players transfer all the time, but since that player receives a free ride it should not be the school's responsibility to make it easy for him/her to leave. He should be able to do as he pleases, but he's gonna have to pay the price first in order to do what he wants. If being restricted from going to certain schools is lawful, then by god he's gonna have to be restricted b/c he already made a commitment to another school who was giving him an education and opportunity for advancement free of money. Now he's gotta pay in some other way if he wants to go against that institution that was trying to help him out by helping themselves.

We, the dawgs, already have 4 good QB's in our stable. We don't need a locker room cancer.

Thanks anyways.
