First, the Jets were spurned by Bill Cowher. Now their brief flirtation with Mike Shanahan is over, according to an NFL source. The Jets made a play for Shanahan, who was unexpectedly fired on Tuesday by the Broncos, but he rebuffed their overtures. The two-time Super Bowl champion coach is taking a two-week vacation and he's not planning to speak with any prospective employers until he returns, he told the NFL Network. With the two biggest names on the coaching market out of reach, the Jets are focusing their search on top assistants, namely Giants defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo, the presumed front-runner. Spagnuolo, also drawing interest from the Broncos, will interview Saturday at the Jets' facility in Florham Park, N.J.

Would you want to coach the Jets? Quarterback issues is never a fun thing to coach.

January 3, 2009  08:26 AM ET

That seals the deal then, Spagnuola will be the Jets coach. 4-3 defense and all. He will be offered the job, Cleveland then is the only other wild card. It will his choice.

And Shanahan goes to Dallas (please!).

I wish. Why Wade Phillips' job is so secure is a mystery to me.

When you have a roster full of talent and still can't get it done, that's a coaching problem. And Garrett doesn't seem to be the Boy Wonder he was supposed to be, either.

They also need a good football guy to run the team. Jerry Jones always being in the middle must have other potential coaches gun shy.

The reason Shanahan was let go in Denver was not because he was a bad coach, but a bad GM. He has won only one play off game in the last decade. He is used to power, and it will be very hard for him to give up complete control. He is a guy who FIRED his " GM" this year. It would be a clash of Titans if he went to Dallas, it could work in the short term, but not for long. I just don't see it. I think Jones is waiting one more year , that may be where Cowher, or Holmgren come in to it..Garrett will never coach that team.

I don't want Shanahan as my coach....
as 50 year just said- he's done NOTHING since elway left
he IMO is very over-rated as a coach -
he's done some nice things in Denver- created a stable
football program....but 1 playoff win in a decade ???

That's not RESULTS.

I also don't like the idea of being able to interview for coaches while the season is still in progress. Its very disruptive for the teams that are still in things to have their coaches interviewing for other jobs.

technically the season is over.....
I do partially agree- but the NFL is so damn complex now that
it really is a 12 m a year job for coaches & execs...
if they wait until feb- they would have less than a month before
the combine to get ready and only a few months to prep for the draft

January 3, 2009  10:09 AM ET

On another note, how about that Utah team? Parity coming to the NCAA now.

lol... Shanahan would never work with Jerry Jones. They both have too much ego.

January 3, 2009  10:28 AM ET

It's clear the little guy has his eye on San Diego where he can tan naturally

January 3, 2009  10:44 AM ET

Mangini's friend rips Favre, Jets; Shanahan and Cowher say thanks but no thanks; I believe there is one common denominator with all 3 stories and that is Brett Favre. That's ok, being a Dolphin fan I like the combination of a mid-level coach and a washed up quaterback. Now that Mangini is gone, Woody can sign the "whining hillbilly"to a multi-year contract and piss off the whole team, but hey, at least they will have a living legend (?) at quarterback.

thats partially the problem, now the season really ends in February and the draft is in April so thats not much time for a team to get things settled.

January 3, 2009  11:20 AM ET

these teams need to start looking at some new talent instead of just recycling the same head coaches from team to team. Marinelli's team went 0-16 and he's up for another job already.

January 3, 2009  11:31 AM ET

he can have any vacant job in the nfl, and probably a few that arent vacant. all he has to do is ask. the longer Mike Shanahan sits out there, the more likely it becomes dan snyder pulls a crazy ivan, and attempts to hire shanahan for a position that isnt empty...

how about he serves 09 as a special consultant to the dallas cowboys and becomes their headcoach in '10..

all sorts of crazy scenarios could play out with this one.

January 3, 2009  11:46 AM ET

Can't blame him one bit! Gotta be nuts to coach the Jets or the Cowboys these days!

January 3, 2009  12:50 PM ET

Jerry Jones has flown to Colorado twice since Thursday. How do I know that? My wife is an Air Traffic Controller at the airport Mr. Jones uses and keeps his private plane. I know he's not going there to snow ski.

January 3, 2009  01:04 PM ET

He would make the Jets a real hard team to stop, if he got in there and installed the every affective offence with the Jets Defence Wow what a combo.

January 3, 2009  01:56 PM ET

No one in their right mind want to be part of that dysfunctional organization, and having the dead weight of Brett Favre to deal with just makes it all that less attractive.
