07:53 AM ET 01.03 | When Boston visits the Garden tomorrow, Stephon Marbury won't be wearing Celtics green. The banished Marbury said he would be "honored" to play for the Celtics, admitted they are on his short list, but denied an ESPN.com report he has made a decision to join Boston if he gets released by the Knicks. Marbury said Boston has not made an offer. A source close to the situation said the Celtics wouldn't be Marbury's No. 1 choice either because of the limited role, backing up emerging point guard Rajon Rondo. Another source said Celtics president Danny Ainge has interest in Marbury, as has been reported here since the summer, but Ainge wonders if a buyout will ever be worked out. Marbury prefers to join a playoff-caliber team in a starting role, though the Celtics could be the pick if his only options require coming off the bench. Marbury threw bouquets the Celtics' way yesterday.

#1 The Celtics do not ned him. #2 He's a cancer. #3 He's mentally ill also.....

"Marbury prefers to join a playoff-caliber team in a starting role"

I am sure he does, but how does that help a playoff-caliber team?

January 3, 2009  09:20 AM ET

Starting as a janitor to keep the courts dry....Sure, why not?

January 3, 2009  09:36 AM ET

For arguments sake......
There is really only one type of team that could 'use' steph-
a team that's in the hunt for a playoff spot- but needs a
little potential spark from the PG position. a 'good' team
will already have a stable pg....and let me say that Steph
wouldn't bring them a title- obviously- but MIGHT get them
into the playoffs

There are only three teams that POSSIBLY should take a flier-

1) Toronto - nothing to lose & they NEED backcourt scoring
2) Milwaukee- same as above-
3) Houston- yeah this is NOT likely with all the combustable parts
but Steph would LOVE playing with Artest and Alston is decent-
but steph could bolster both back-court spots....

To be honest- Houston would be the BEST fit for him (not that I
care for his well-being) plenty of egos/big contracts & he could
simply 'get lost' there

January 3, 2009  09:38 AM ET

Marbury has lost a step and is not the player he once was. Even during his prime(4-5 years ago) he was not worth the distraction. Why would any top tier team want him. He is washed up. That is why he doesn't accept less as a buyout, because he knows his days on the gravy train are over.

celts dont need this ego driven slack ****...keep him in new york, you poisoned him

QUOTE(#6):

actually- he poisoned himself back in his Minnesota days....
we simply inherited his contract & ego

although- he did grow up here....so technically- I guess we DID create the problem

Cavs fans everywhere are hoping that the Celts inject themselves with this cancer.

January 3, 2009  11:18 AM ET

He will go to the Celtics, I mean who wouldn't wanna go there? They are looking good to repeat and it's an easy ring for him and would stop all the haters saying 'he's never led a playoff team to winning in the postseason' I HOPE HE GETS A RING JUST CAUSE SO MANY PEOPLE WILL HATE FOR IT TO HAPPEN.

MARBURY FOR MVP, ROY, DUNK CHAMP, 3 POINT CHAMP, ALL STAR GAME MVP, ROOKIE GAME MVP, FINALS MVP, MOST IMPROVED, 6TH MAN, PLAYSTATION STILLS CHAMP AND GREATEST OF ALL TIME.

I'M BACK FROM OWNING ROOKIES IN THE US. Y'ALL SUCK!

Exactly. Why are the Celtics taking this risk? They don't really need Marbury to win games, but they'll probably lose a few with him.

The idea of Marbury having the potential to get a ring in this manner ... enough to make me root against the Celtics. Plain and simple. All he has done is whine and complain his way out of the Knicks, and the Celtics want to reward him for his child-like behavior.

If cancer could get cancer it would be called Marbury.

Actually, if Boston could get him off the bench, he'd help provide scoring off the bench.

January 3, 2009  12:53 PM ET

I don't think they will get him, they really dont need another PG, what they need right now is another backup Short Forward and another Big Man to sure up their bench. If they got Marbury then they wouldn't be able to get someone for either of those two positions.

January 3, 2009  01:07 PM ET

If Marbury wanted to play...and the interest was really there from a team...he would have jumped at the buyout offered. If a ring meant that much to him, he would say "just free me, I want to play basketball, I don't care about the money".

January 3, 2009  01:24 PM ET

Either the Celtics earn this bum a ring, or he brings them down like every other team he's been a part of. I hope Boston signs him and experience the latter.

January 3, 2009  01:48 PM ET

I told you guys he was lying about Boston wanting him. He's got head issues - he can't live without drama...

January 3, 2009  02:03 PM ET

what happened to all of his talent... Such a pitty

Agreed. At this point, the only thing this guy should be picking is his nose. Teams should be very wary of him. How about a 10-day contract?
