Teddy Atlas is one Jet who won't be back next year. The famed boxing trainer and Jets "special assistant" ripped the organization and quarterback Brett Favre yesterday. Atlas, a close friend of Eric Mangini, said the recently fired coach was doomed from the moment the Jets acquired Favre. "Mangini went into the season ready for a whole different approach, whether it was going to be Chad Pennington or Kellen Clemens (at quarterback), whoever won that battle," Atlas told The Post. "It was going to be a secure, protect the ball, intelligent approach. It was something he was comfortable with, something he believed in. The whole plan, the whole blueprint got thrown out the window when Favre came. He's the antithesis of that. He throws the ball all over the place." Mangini brought Atlas in to work with the Jets, giving them boxing training in the offseason and providing motivational talks during the season. Atlas appeared on 1050 ESPN Radio yesterday, and talked with The Post about the Jets' firing of Mangini. Atlas is listed in the Jets' media guide as "special assistant - boxing." Atlas said Jets owner Woody Johnson forced the trade upon Mangini.

He was nt a good coach. For sure - Favre is a chance taker, but did not everyone know that before he was brought into the Jet's womb? only a bunch of inbred animals jump on another while they are down.

what the eff?

January 3, 2009  08:27 AM ET

I'm sorry wasn't a protect-the-ball gameplan what made Favre have such a good last season in Green Bay? That was what the media told us that McCarthy was coaching Favre to protect the ball...why couldn't Mangini manage to do that?

January 3, 2009  08:47 AM ET

its like anyone else that gets fired from a job, your always pointing fingers saying its the other guys fault. What I'm surprised at is that he's getting interest from other teams so quickly

January 3, 2009  08:55 AM ET

Bottom line is that the Jets have been about trickery/
crazy formations/motion......why to try and 'confuse' the
other teams defense- WHY?

A real team lines up and plays football. you BLOCK and
either run or throw the ball...period.
If you are better than the other team you score.
Same as with the defense- how any damn alignments do
they throw for confusion sake....WHY ?
line up and rush the damn Qb and get the ball

That is the COACHES fault for not having enough confidence
in his team to simply PLAY BALL.

I was EXTREMELY encouraged when we hired him-
but he was basically a more 'intelligent' Herm Edwards
conservative to a fault.....

as far as Farve- he is JUST as much to blame-
bottom line though is the play calling- that's COACHING
we should've run 95% of the time in Seattle - coaching
kicking Fg's vs punting- coaching
punting vs going for a 4th down- coaching.

He FAILED

You left out a few:

Calling for fifteen yard routes on third and two - coaching
....doing the same thing on Fourth and two - coaching
Taking the ball out of the hands of your best offensive player (L. Washington) - coaching (are they trying to keep him on a discount or what?)

I'm sure we could do this all day, but teams cover two man the jets all day because they knew Farve was going to try and squeeze it to Coles or Cotchery. When the Jets were winning, Farve was finding Stuckey in the slot, but then Coles started crying about not getting touches.

Who tells Coles to **** and play football - coaching

When was the last time one of Atlas's boxer won a big match, losers leading losers.

Biggest one of them all....

I think I saw a stat in their last 4 games (not Miami)
that he TOUCHED the ball only like 14 times or so....

ARE YOU KIDDING ME ????

he should have MINIMUM 10 touches per game--> COACHING

January 3, 2009  10:21 AM ET

The Jets haven't been good since Richard Todd, there I'm showing my age and the Jets penchant for futility.

January 3, 2009  10:22 AM ET

In addition to Teddy Atlas, the kid who played Schwartz from the movie "A Christmas Story" & the guy (Peter Weller) who played "Robocop" both feel that Eric should've stayed on as coach.

Finally, there's the woman who played "Blanche" on the "Golden Girls" who actually cancelled her season tickets with the Jets and has asked that her name be removed from the PSL List.

January 3, 2009  10:25 AM ET

No one has been able to coach Favre since Holmgren. With coaching he will listen to, Fvre is the best ever. Without it he is always 2nd best when it really counts.

January 3, 2009  10:26 AM ET

Stupid ppl,,, the coach was bad,the jets Never needed Farve but they got him, what makes me not like the coach is trick plays,,Who in there right mind lines Farve up at the WR spot? the plays like that never went anywhere. sandlot Football needs to be left in the back yard. As for Farve I'm a huge GB fan they should had let him bk he would have had another great year but I'm happy for Arron,,he will do awesome next year eveen better than this year but farve needs a good o line like the one in GB,jets dont have it never will the if you take Stucky out of play and Cotchery,,who do you have? Cole who drops more passes than Brett has picked off and has no speed well what you get it a losing record. didnt take teames long after beating NE and TENN who they had to shut down, and yeah they should have gave the ball to Washington and actullay Blocked for Brett

Who calls the offensive plays in NYJ? Brian Schottenheimer. Yet he's still there while Mangini takes the walk.

As a GM, you don't trade for a player that your Head Coach doesn't want. Especially not a big name, big money player.

January 3, 2009  10:40 AM ET

Did anyone hear Schlereth and Tim Hasselbeck on ESPN trying to refute what Jets players were saying about Favre:

Schlereth on Thomas Jones: Thomas Jones only had 1 rushing TD the year before, so clearly Favre made him a better player. Oh really? And it had nothing to do with the tens of millions of guaranteed dollars the Jets shelled out to improve their offensive line? Guess not. Idiot.

Hasselbeck on Favre not socializing: He's 39 years old and all the players are in there 20s. So clearly he's very different from them and its understandable that he doesn't hang out with others. Hey, Hasselbeck. They weren't talking about how Favre wouldn't go clubbing with them. They were talking about how he was distant with them at practice and he wouldn't go grab dinner with the guys. I'm sorry, but just because you're 39 doesn't mean you can't go to Applebee's with your buddies. Honestly, Michael Strahan was 36 when he last played, but was he distant with his teammates? NO!!!

& sometimes when the HC does want the guy...like Andy Reid and TO

January 3, 2009  10:42 AM ET

This is all Jason Whitten's fault. He should not have dimed out the Jets Coach, even if he is not on his team. Dam Cowboys!

Obviously you've never seen Brett and his awesome blocking when he splits out wide.

January 3, 2009  10:44 AM ET

The Jets doomed their franchise for at least another 5 years with the wrongful firing of Mangini. Thankfully the city has the Giants......the ONLY true NFL team in New York. The Jets should move to LA and start over from scratch. Seriously.....a 39 year old QB was worth all of this mess? What a joke.

Dallas Cowboys have disguised themselves as the Jets.
