Jets owner's absence upset Cowher

New details of the Jets' quick and ill-fated courtship of Bill Cowher have come to light. He had agreed Tuesday to speak with the Jets about their vacancy, but he withdrew his name from consideration several hours later because, in part, he wasn't able to speak directly with owner Woody Johnson, according to a person with knowledge of the situation. "Bill Cowher easily could've been enticed to coach if Woody Johnson would've taken a sit-down meeting with him," the person said. "Cowher's camp was told that Woody was out of the country and couldn't have a sit-down with him." Chances are, it wouldn't have changed the outcome, according to a person close to Cowher, but the "Where's Woody?" routine apparently was the last straw for the former Steelers coach. Johnson is out of the country, a person familiar with the search confirmed, adding that Johnson speaks several times a day with GM Mike Tannenbaum. Cowher-to-the-Jets was a longshot from the outset - he apparently will remain a CBS studio analyst for at least another year - but face time with Johnson might have helped the Jets' chances. He never had a phone conversation with the owner. Tannenbaum is the point man in the coaching search, although Johnson was willing to make himself available to speak with Cowher, according to a person close to the team.

Yeah, that would be a slight all right. Wow, you want this coach but don't even have the decency to meet with him. Stupid.

January 3, 2009  08:40 AM ET

The Jets will never know how close they were this year to actually putting something together.

Then they go out and get Favre, botch the Cowher hiring...who would want to coach a team whose QB choices for next year are either a semi-retired Favre or "unknown"?

They're not cursed. They're stupid.

I don't know-
the GM is the one who hires the coach....I wouldn't say
it is a 'slight' when he's coming in for a preliminary talk
as to his possible interest and the owner isn't there-

- it's clear the Jets would've basically done anything
to have cower...Woody not being there seems like a minor
thing- especially since he is basically an absent owner....
unlike Jerry jones or snyder-

Yesterday it was "Jets execs hoping for Favre retirement?" Then today we get this.

Sounds like all the Jets problems start at the top of their organization.

January 3, 2009  10:27 AM ET

Sounds like the Jets are becoming like the Raiders in their ability to attract decent coaches.

January 3, 2009  10:28 AM ET

Its funny how the Jets were acting like they were going to make this a full court press, pull out all the stops approach to getting Cowher. We're going to give you a say in personnel decisions! We're gonna take away some of Tannenbaum's influence! We're gonna give you one of the richest contracts in NFL coaching history! But we're not going to have the owner on hand to talk to you. Ooops.

The interesting thing is Cowher agreed to sit down with the Jets and not Cleveland. It had been reported that he'd done this for two reasons: one, Cleveland is a division rival of Pittsburgh's so he didn't want to insult his old team and two, he apparently had a lot of respect for the Jets and wanted to at least listen to them first before turning them down. Guess they didn't have enough respect for him to at least make this seem like an actual meeting.

Boo frickin' hoo Bill, take it on the chin.

January 3, 2009  10:43 AM ET

The Cowboys have disguised themselves as the Jets. This is all Jerry Jones fault. losers

Woody and Jets fans have watched 3 first-time head coaches become train wrecks down stretch (Groh, Herm, Mangini). Now all we here about is this love-fest with Spags. Woody needs to do what old-man Hess did a decade ago and get the best accomplished head coach out there (Bill Parcells at the time - Bill Cowher now). WE NEED BILL COWHER!!!!!!!! Woody fired Mangini Monday morning after sending out a 2:45am email to the press, then leaves the country after the press conference?!?!?! Are you kidding me? Ridiculous! Of course Cowher wants a sitdown and face-to-face with Woody without Mr T (who is as nervous as a goat about to be slaughtered) - and if Woody was committed to the team and the fans he would hop on his jet and helicopter to go meet Cowher in person immediately (like Jerry Jones did at Teterboro airport to get Parcells). Cowher needs to be handed the keys to the Jets by Woody like Hess did with Parcells. Woody - you are crazy if you let Cowher get away because you will not meet alone with him in person. GO GET COWHER NOW!!!!!!!

Ha ha haaaaaaaaa! Wow, I didn't know that Cowher is such a prima-donna drama-queen. His little hissy fit reveals that his tough blue-collar image is a fraud.

Go rage to your therapist, Bill.

January 3, 2009  11:28 AM ET

bunk. this story is wishful thinking and finger point in an attempt to sell papers. cowher was not coming to the jets in 09. no matter what they did or didnt do during the courtship.

The NY Jets are quickly becoming the Dallas Cowboys of the north! All they need is someone like T.O. and the Pack!

January 3, 2009  11:56 AM ET

Sooooooooo, it wasn't that he didn't want to coach Favre after all. Now, it is clear why the Jets will always be a marginal team. It may turn out that the 9-7 may be the best record for many years to come.

You stupid arse, get off your mother's computer! It was the Jets who reached out for Cowher. If you knew anything about business, you know that if the owner isn't envolved not everthing promised will materialize. Cowher didn't throw any fit, he just became uninterested. Psts like yours bring down this blog.

January 3, 2009  12:07 PM ET

So, Cowher is a LIAR!!! Cowher told the Browns he's not interested in coaching this season, but only a week later he is scoffed that the Jets owner would not sit down with him.

As a RAIDERS fan I think the difference is that the owner (Al Davis) not being at the meeting would have been a positive instead of a negative. LOL

If you're talking to a first time coach, maybe. If the Jets really want Cowher, they need to realize he's not taking a back seat to their GM. Why? Because he's in the power position, not them. He has the experience, the record, and, the choice. The Jets have only money and a need for him. Anyone who gets Cowher will do things his way.

January 3, 2009  12:40 PM ET

I wonder why Woody was out of the country? Interviewing coaches in the European league? lol
