Shanahan likely sitting out 2009

Mike Shanahan sounds very much like a man who plans to coach again, but probably not in 2009. Unless he finds "a perfect situation'' in 2009, Shanahan said in remarks to me reported this afternoon on NBC that he'll likely sit out a year, then return to the NFL in 2010. "What I'm going to do is take a couple of weeks to sit back and relax a little, then consider what it is I'm going to do,'' said the 56-year-old Shanahan, the two-time Super Bowl winner fired by Denver owner Pat Bowlen on Tuesday. "Unless there's a perfect situation out there, I'd rather sit out the year and return next year.'' There could be one intriguing match for Shanahan in 2009. New England vice president of player personnel Scott Pioli interviewed for the Browns' general manager job Wednesday and will talk with Chiefs owner Clark Hunt in the coming days. Who knows if Pioli will get offered one of the jobs, and whether he'll take it. But Shanahan always ran his own ship, from bow to stern, in Denver, and Pioli could be the strong personnel presence Shanahan needs so he can concentrate on coaching and nothing else.

pulling a cowher eh?

It's mostly 3-4 defense teams available anyway. That's not Shanahan's style.

January 4, 2009  08:37 AM ET

With what he has to choose from, I'd sit out too.

He might also be waiting for a coaching job that allows him to bring his son, Kyle (offensive coordinator for the Texans) with him.

He, like Cowher, can sit back and wait for the right situation.

Shanahan's a good coach, but he sucked with the GM duties. He had a bunch of crappy drafts, especially with the defensive players. That's what did him in. The Bronocos should have kept him as coach and hired a decent GM. They may have offered him that and he refused.

Shanahan wants to spend more time working on his tan.

Pioli and Shanahan together??? It could work! I've hated Shanahan for so long being a Chiefs fan, but even I have to admit the guy is a great coach. I wouldn't oppose a move to hire Shanahan because he knows the Chiefs' weaknesses better than anyone and he also knows the AFC West like the back of his hand. Ultimately, Tony Gonzalez would want out of KC (which would be sad to see), but the team could get better immediately, while **** off Denver fans. I like it! :)

He'll take a year off and evaluate teams and see who is the best fit. Either that or he knows where he is going and is waitng for them to fire coaches or have their contracts run out.

Every time I see that picture of Shanahan I think either he's in the Hall of Fame (doubtful) or he's been selling real estate for Century 21. lol

Not to mention the fact that he is perpetually in a state of surprise.

Cowher and Shanahan are gonna have a cage fight for the Cowboys job. lol

He could go to Detroit, they were as perfect as they could get. Oh, wait, they are interviewing a guy named Malarky, just what they were full of.

The vikings head coaching position will be open in a couple days!

January 5, 2009  03:16 AM ET

He'll be the next coach of the Indianapolis Colts whenever Tony Dungy decides to retire.
