Source: Lowe won't sign with Mets

If Derek Lowe is going to end up a Met, the team and the pitcher have a lot of negotiating to do. In fact, some in baseball believe there are more aggressive teams lusting for Lowe who are willing to offer much more than the money the Mets have talked about paying the free-agent pitcher. "I don't think they (the Mets) are going to get him," one baseball source said. The Mets have floated the framework of a deal worth slightly more than $36 million over three years to Lowe, but Lowe has no interest in that contract because he believes he's worth much more - perhaps as much as $16 million per season, a figure reported by the MLB Network Saturday night on its "Hot Stove" show.

Braves could sure the hell use him!!!!

Pick him up ATL!!!

lol
can I just give Mr Lowe one little piece of advice.....

you are Derek Lowe-
you're 36, you are a # 3 or 4 starter and until you played
in the NL west- you needed a second hand to count your ERA

Be Giddy you were offered a FAIR deal by a team that is a contender

January 4, 2009  11:46 AM ET

Lowe is holding out on a contract such as Burnett got, which is understandable because he has better numbers over the last 3-5 years, and he's much more durable. But, the Yankees overpaid for Burnett, and other teams are willing to overpay for Lowe.

A 3-year deal with a team such as Atlanta would probably get it done if you add some incentive clauses and maybe an option.

He's a guy that will eat up innings and is rarely injured but he's not worth 16 - 17 million. He's a ground ball pitcher that needs a solid defence behind him. I don't think 12 or 13 million is that unrealistic

January 4, 2009  12:44 PM ET

The Mets will give him a higher offer of his 3-year $36 million. He going to ended up with the mets because the Red Sox said their are not after him and he's not going back to the Dodgers.

Well a team that contends until the last three weeks of the season.

That's not accurate. They contend until the last day of the season.

That's right, who knocked them out? :p

January 4, 2009  03:02 PM ET

Lowe will end up a Yankee and complete the rotation. Then Chamberlain can stay a releiver.

January 4, 2009  03:28 PM ET

Good ole greed, never fails to amaze me how these average players think they are worth more than they are. He is not worth 16 cents much less 16 million.

January 4, 2009  04:07 PM ET

He will get his money but it probably won't be 90M like he is reportedly looking for. He would probably settlt for 15yr / 4 years / 60M. Like someone said earlier his numbers and post sesson success / experience suggest he sould get a Burnett like contract. The difference is Burnett is a power pitcher with great stuff and that is what the Yanks are paying for (good luck). Derek is a ground ball pitcher so he is not going to get top of the rotation starter money.

He is durable unlike Burnett and someone is going to get a very good pitcher. Just for too much $$ but who is not making too much $$ in the MLB.

January 4, 2009  04:43 PM ET

The Dodgers might think about taking him back, but certainly not at the price he's asking. He is definitely over estimating his value...........

January 4, 2009  05:00 PM ET

Boras must be on crack.. How can he expect Burnett money when the Yankees overpaid for him? Lowe is 36 years old, 15 or 16 million is unacceptable.. Braves are just a smokescreen & the Phillies have a starting rotation that won the World Series, they have no need for him.. The Mets will be his destination, figure 3 years for 39 mil, more than fair.. If not, Hey Derek & BORASS, don't let the door knob hit you where the lord split you..

The Yankees just spent a half a billion on 3 FA's, they are done this off-season..

January 4, 2009  05:12 PM ET

Boreass is on crack. He has got Lowe believing he's worth 4 yrs. at 16 mil each. 36 yrs. old and anyone giving him more than 3 yrs. is foolish or desperate. Sounds like a Yankee or Met signing for sure.

January 4, 2009  05:15 PM ET

If I were Lowe, I'd take that deal. Like jgb mentioned, Lowe's 36, has had a bad ERA last couple of years. Take whatever you can get right now.

3 yrs, 36 million.

ton of money.

January 4, 2009  06:38 PM ET

The Brewers need pitching - I can see them overpaying for Lowe

January 4, 2009  07:16 PM ET

Lowe sucks. The guy never even did that well in the NL West.Look at Pettites numbers in Houston and than as a Yankee and well Lowes numbers as a Red Sock and you'll see that bringing him back to the AL East would be a huge mistake. Especially for the $15-18 M for 5-7 years that he wants. I mean why have the Dodgers not even asked him back? theres got to be a reason other than money.
