Favre sounds ready to retire

Speaking to Brett Favre Friday night from Mississippi, I got the distinct impression that he was going to retire from football, this time for good. But they don't sell insurance for this kind of thing, obviously, as his flip-flopping of the last three years shows. I reported today on NBC Sports that Favre told me he informed Jets GM Mike Tannenbaum that "it may be time to look in a different direction'' at the quarterback position when they spoke Monday. A day earlier, Favre continued his poor play down the stretch -- the Jets finished by losing four of their last five, ruining their 8-3 start that had them in Super Bowl contention -- in a disastrous three-interception loss to the Dolphins. The Jets fired Eric Mangini as coach ... and could have made Favre's decision about whether to return in 2009 a negative.. Favre said that Tannenbaum said to him Monday, "If I ask you about your future now, I know what you'll say. So I'm not going to ask you.'' What Tannenbaum did ask Favre is to give his decision some time, that the Jets definitely wanted him back and he should take all the time he needs to decide.

Since Favre can't live without the media spotlight, I suspect there will be another 5898850 stories about his pending "retirement" followed up by friends, family, and possibly a pet dog weighing in on the issue. Then, if the Jets don't do everything exactly as Brett deems, he will attempt to throw them under the bus as he did the Packers. Then, he will demand a trade to a division rival, won't get it, pouts, "crocodile tears" retirement speech quickly followed up by another "un-retirement" revival and tour.

We've seen it before and we all know how this story ends. Here we go again......

I think Brett has finally thrown his last pick. The fallout after last Sunday and the fact we all had to watch him fizzle at the end has got to be hard for him. Retire and let them name a commemorative cheese-brat after you in Sheboygin and give you giant statue at Lambeau.
A first ballot HOF and eventually nobody will remember Brett the Jet.

The end of and Era.

I always like it when my team played Favre, either you win because of all the picks he throws or you lose on some of his amazing last minute heroics!

Good. See ya Brett. Don't let the door hit you in the a.s.s. on your way out. But I'll believe it when I see it.

Whatever you're lookin for
Hey don't come around here no more

I think Brett Favre just tries to get out of training camp. The conditioning is bad on his arthritis.

Once it gets close to preseason he'll want to play again.

TP and The HBs. Nice.

Why would he want to come back to a team of backstabbers who have never won a thing... but criticize a legend when he has left for the season? Playing in New York is suicide if you don't win - they certainly love you.. but man, if you don't - they can whine with the best.

January 4, 2009  09:27 AM ET

He not only sounds ready to retire, he looks it.

January 4, 2009  10:08 AM ET

Farve is not a legend. You cannot be a legend when you are still playing the game. Perhaps in 100 years he will be a legend.

January 4, 2009  10:08 AM ET

Go sit down. Seen and heard enough about and from you. a shame that you broke Marino's record he has more class than you ever will, redneck

January 4, 2009  10:26 AM ET

Three coaches in three years; maybe that is too much for Brett at this stage in life. But who knows?

give me a break-
Farve has one ONCE over a decade ago.

He had possibly one of the WORST stretches any Qb has EVER
had - likely due to him being injured, he 'refused' to
acknowledge he was hurting and he cost the Jets their season

Jones said that he played like GARBAGE- which he did
- how exactly is that backstabbing ?

January 4, 2009  10:39 AM ET

1 more year Bret!

January 4, 2009  11:21 AM ET

I don't care one way or another, I just want the guy to make a decision and stick with it.

January 4, 2009  11:29 AM ET

Comments like Thomas Jones's aren't backstabbing. They are TRUE. Favre has won one Superbowl despite the fact he is often surrounded by a ton of talent. He isn't exactly the king of clutch the media likes to paint. I'm a big time Patriot hater and it pains me to say this, but Tom Brady has more clutch in his pinky finger than Brett Favre has in his entire body. Even Brady's backup looked more clutch than Favre this year!

no one has ever held him accountable his entire career. im glad to see someone finally do it. its good to average more than a td a game during a season but when your INT average is just as high its time someone called him out for it.

When it comes to time for his Hall of Fame vote, the voters should wait for the second year of eligibility to vote him in, just to make sure he's actually staying retired...

January 4, 2009  12:09 PM ET

Brett won't come back to the Jets. He doesn't get a free pass from the fans for all his picks and spotty play like he did in Green Bay. I hope he comes back and at least gets them to the playoffs, but I don't think he will.
