Some GMs down on Dunn

The Dodgers are entertaining Adam Dunn as an option if they don't re-sign Manny Ramirez. While he is considered an "elite" offensive player by some of the general managers we spoke to because of his power (40 or more homers five straight years) and on-base percentage (career .381), his defense at first base or a corner outfield spot is a major liability. He's best suited as a DH. As one American League GM pointed out, "He'd better not be The Guy because he has a lot of holes in his swing and he can be pitched to."

Absolutely a LOT of holes.....
BUT
his #s (minus the k's) are VERY good

No reason not to sign this guy if you need a bat
OR
if you are in a small ballpark.....

Dunn has been ripped a lot in the media, but he can be a contributor. I agree that he cannot be THE guy, but he would look good hitting in the 5 or 6 hole on almost any team.

I think he can be a great fit for some team that is looking for a little power, yeah he stikes out a lot but he can serve a little protection for someone. And he won't be that expensive. He'll probably take a 2 year deal.

Shouldn't the Angels look at him? Maybe Texas? Imagine him hitting in Colorado. Tampa could put him to work if he'd come fairly cheap. This guy has some value.

January 4, 2009  01:24 PM ET

Outside of striking out too much, having no glove, not very fast, not patient, not that good of a batting average...... Outside of that he is a good player. I would buy him for 5 dollars.

I'm surprised more teams aren't looking at him. Yes, the strikeouts, low batting average, and below average glove are minuses, but he has plenty going for him. He is entering the prime of his career (he'll be 29 during the 2009 season), he is almost a lock for 40 home runs and probably 100 RBIs with decent people in front of him, and people forget he draws over 100 walks every season and has an OBP about 150 points over his average, and that's without drawing many intentional walks. He's also not going to be a head case like Manny or Milton. I'm surprised the Cubs haven't looked into him as a larger possibility for right field. Might be a better bargain than Bradley or Abreu, and will be a more reliable investment.

He strikes out a ton, is aweful in the field. Those two things are huge when dealing with a guy who wants a longterm big deal. He is better suited on a team who could DH him and not worry about his strikeouts. The Rays, Rangers, Orioles, and Mariners would be good fits for him.

I've said this before and will say it again:

Dunn isn't getting as much attention as he should be. This guy will get a team 40 HRs / 100 RBIs a year...sure he may strike out a lot, but that's how sluggers are (see Ryan Howard and is Howard known for his defensive skills?). Few players can get you this kind of production.

Unless he's a disruptive problem child, teams should be lining up to sign this guy.

but the question goes back to the top then.....
why is he still on the market ?

January 4, 2009  02:19 PM ET

What exactly makes him an "elite" hitter? That's and easy one. How many guys do you know can strike out 200+ times a year?

Hard to figure, but if he is a disruptive influence, there would be articles and reports floating around detailing his moronic antics or comments...perhaps Dunn is just so low key and laid back in his demeanor that GMs simply don't have him on their mindset, which is too bad...he's the complete opposite of say Manny Ramirez in that sense.

January 4, 2009  02:49 PM ET

Dunn is not a clubhouse problem. Everything I've read about the guy indicates that teammates like him and his goofiness. Kind of like a Will Ferrell that can hit for power.

January 4, 2009  02:51 PM ET

Is Boras his agent? Maybe he's waiting for Manny to set the market. My surprise is why is Abreau still out there? He was very consistant last year for the Yankees.

not very patient? His OBP is good every year for some reason. Don't equate high k's with not being very patient. obp is obp. there's guys with good avg's who have obps almost equal to their avg.

January 4, 2009  04:41 PM ET

If he is only suited to be a DH, someone better tell the Dodgers they don't use a DH, or they will be in trouble.......

January 4, 2009  05:56 PM ET

Are you kidding me? He is like Dr. Jackel and Mr Hyde. His nickname say it all (big donkey).

His batting average is a joke: .266, .247, .234, .264, .236.
I agree with obp he has been consistant minus one year. .388, .387, .365, .386 .386.

January 4, 2009  07:31 PM ET

He is a DH - nothing more nothing less - call the Yankees !!!

January 4, 2009  07:58 PM ET

He may get a lot of Ks but he's also going to create a lot of runs for some team. (Hopefully the Nats.)

January 5, 2009  12:13 AM ET

Yep, he strikes out a bunch, isn't very good defensively, etc., etc., but he might be a very good fit for the Dodgers, if they don't sign Manny. He is certainly better than Manny in the field, and the Blue Crew desperately needs a power presence in the lineup to keep the pitchers honest with the kids. Just look at how Ethier and/or Kemp did batting in front of Manny. Plus, he'll come at a significant savings to Manny, which the Dodgers can then use to sign a front-line pitcher, which they also desperately need.
