The Browns are continuing their dialogue with Patriots Vice President Scott Pioli, but Pioli is weighing his options -- including staying in New England, a source close to the negotiations told The Plain Dealer. Pioli is expected to interview with the Kansas City Chiefs sometime over the next couple of days. If he takes himself out of the running in Cleveland, the Browns will focus their attention on fired Jets coach Eric Mangini, a source said. Meanwhile, Atlanta President Rich McKay can get back into the mix now that the Falcons are out of the playoffs following their wild-card loss to the Cardinals on Saturday. McKay postponed a scheduled interview with the Browns on Thursday so he could focus on the game. He will research the situation before deciding whether to interview with Browns owner Randy Lerner, a source said. Two other head coaching candidates -- fired Broncos coach Mike Shanahan and Titans defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz -- are on the backburner for now. Shanahan was contacted by the Browns, but told them he will be on vacation with his family for the next two weeks and will not interview during that time, a source said. If the Browns haven't hired a coach by then, they might still reach out to him.

I think Pioli is the wild card in all this front office musical chairs that is going on. Or if not the wild card ,the man who will make the biggest impact on a team. Maybe Spagnuolo but Pioli will shake things up where ever he lands.

Why wouldn't Pioli jump at a promotion? Either he's as good as everyone says he is... or he's afraid he'll get exposed outside New England.

Why would Cleveland focus their full attention on Mangini if/when Pioli turns them down? I thought the whole purpose was to reunite them... not split them up.

That could be it!

The same thing will happen to Cassell if he's on another team next year!

(1) go to a loser

(2) keep my job with a winner

If Pioli is as good as advertised he should jump at the opportunity to turn a loser team around.

I think he will jump at an opportunity to rebuild a team... I just don't think it will be Cleveland. All reports in KC are that Pioli is the man that Chiefs Owner Clark Hunt is focused on. He'll give him the money AND THE CONTROL to pick his next head coach. Pioli won't have that option if he goes to Cleveland. Browns Owner Randy Lerner is taking a hands on approach and wants to pick the head coach. If Pioli goes to Kansas City, it's his baby and he'll have full power to do anything he wants. KC also has a President position available, so who knows... Clark Hunt could make Bill Parcells, Pioli's father in law apart of the plan here if Pioli asked. Pioli has all the power in KC, where he would be a puppet for Lerner in Cleveland.

January 4, 2009  01:51 PM ET

One more thing... Earlier reports from the Cleveland said that Pioli wanted Iowa Head Coach Kirk Ferentz as his head coach. An Iowa guy wouldn't work in Cleveland (Ohio State territory), but it would work perfectly in Kansas City, where it would help grow the fan base in eastern Iowa, eastern Missouri & western Illinois.

Pioli and his wife like Boston. They like New England. They are not sure they want to move their family. He wants the challenge, but a front office job is more like a 'Regular' job than a coach, so it's not the same thing as a coordinator getting his chance at a head coaching job. Because of Mangini's Spy Gate hijinx, its been rumored that there is no way he would 'reunite' with him.

Very good point, but then again... he'd have to turn down a ton of money to stay. That could be hard to do. Also, here are a few more reasons to consider coming to KC (from the KC Star / Jason Whitlock):

"If a qualified man wants to be an NFL GM, running the Kansas City Chiefs should be his dream job. Scott Pioli, Kevin Colbert and Chris Polian ??? the most qualified and coveted future GMs ??? have more reason to pursue Clark Hunt than Hunt has to pursue them. Why?

???The Hunt family employed Carl Peterson for 20 years, demonstrating a level of loyalty and patience that is pretty much nonexistent in professional sports.

???The Hunts gave Peterson a degree of autonomy that is pretty much nonexistent in professional sports.

???The Chiefs are more than $30 million below the salary cap and are in position to unload a few more unproductive, expensive veterans this offseason.

???The Chiefs are one season away from playing in a fancy, exciting, renovated Arrowhead Stadium.

???There???s no one within the football side of the organization that a new GM has to show any loyalty. He can clean out the scouting department and coaching staff.

???Expectations are low."

Hopefully Pioli stays with New England...why go to a rebuilding job when you're already working for a winner!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

January 4, 2009  05:20 PM ET

All other teams are a joke. stay with the best franchise in sports. especially with all the extra picks we will have after we trade cassell.

Nothing against Kansas. I've never been there, but I am sure its fine. I travel all over the country for work, but live in New England. I can tell you that New England in general is a love it or hate it place. The 6 states combined are truly like a different country than the other 42 contiguous. If you love it, then no other location will do, and no amount of anything can get you to move. My guess is that is what Pioli and his family are struggling with. In the past few years he hasn't even interviewed when given a chance (ie Atlanta). My guess is he won't leave.

Yes!

January 4, 2009  07:30 PM ET

Remember he wouldn't even talk with Seattle, and they have deeeeeepppp pockets. I think its 50/50 for him to go anywhere. Remember his pop-in-law is Parcells and look at the contract Parcells has. You gotta believe that he wants a lot to leave, and the question is how far teams are willing to go to get him.

January 4, 2009  07:44 PM ET

Yada, yada, yada - Scott remains with the Pats !!!

For the challenge, maybe? As a Pats fan I want him to stay and I hope that since he hasn't left in all these years, he really doesn't want to. But it doesn't hurt to talk to other teams.
