How Dolphins fleeced Cowboys

When Dolphins tight end Joey Haynos found out Friday how little his team had to give up in a trade with the Cowboys to acquire linebacker Akin Ayodele and tight end Anthony Fasano, his reaction was pretty standard. ''A fourth-round pick?'' said Haynos, a puzzled look on his face. ``Why in the world would anyone give them up for that?'' In retrospect, it's easy to see why anyone might be surprised by this move. The Dolphins didn't just land one eventual starter -- they got two. Fasano leads the team in receiving touchdowns with seven, and Ayodele is third on the team with 74 tackles. They have both been key reasons why Miami is headed to the playoffs, all while the team that traded them was eliminated. Further legitimizing what might be the most underrated personnel move of last year's NFL offseason, the Dolphins have continued to quietly make the deal look even more foolish on Dallas' part. The Cowboys, who would end up trading that fourth-round pick for several other inconsequential picks, drafted linebacker Erik Walden with one of them. But Dallas eventually cut Walden -- only to have him be picked up on waivers by the Dolphins. Yes, Walden now plays special teams in Miami.

Couple that with the Roy Williams trade and I think Jerry Jones needs a facelift on his personnel dept. All puns intended.

And Jones wonders why they can't win a playoff game with all the "Talent" they have!

what's up with the dallas moves this season? its clearly not been a good cowboy season in the front office.

January 4, 2009  08:29 AM ET

Bill Parcells on the assist.

January 4, 2009  09:13 AM ET

It worked out well for the Dolphins, but in fairness to the Cowboys Akin Ayodele was a salary dump. He was due to count $3.5 million against the cap , and not play much and Fasano was not going to replace Whitten. It looks bad the way the story is written, but neither of these guys would have played much for the Cowboys. You can argue they got nothing with their draft pick, but you can say that about most teams with their fourth round picks.
If the Cowboys never made that trade, they would have ended up with the same record.

Look, the Giants gave Grant away to the Packers for a seventh round pick. Why? Because they had no place for him with their other RBs. They get Hixon from the Broncos for nothing, and Derrick Ward from the Jets for nothing ( off practice squads). This stuff happens all the time.

Yes, but you still have to realize what you have and get fair value for them, even if you don't "need" them. The Cowboys basically just gave away 3 regular contributors to the Dolphins for nothing.

January 4, 2009  10:42 AM ET

Parcells has done this everywhere he's gone, thats why he's able to turn a team around so quickly. if he leaves the fins and goes elsewhere, you can rest assured he's taking people with him

January 4, 2009  11:05 AM ET

both of those players played awful last year. in fact fasano dropped an easy td pass in last years playoff game

I agree with you about Akin Ayodele and the Dallas record being unaffected but...

Dallas traded Anthony Fasano and then used a 2nd round draft pick (Martellus Bennett) to replace him. That half was a bad move.

Jerry Jones was on fire this draft. He snagged Felix Jones and Mike Jenkins in the 1st. I realize that Jenkins was criticized for his run defense but he wasn't half-bad in coverage.

Martellus Bennett, Tarshard Choice and Orlando Scandrick all got significant playing time for late round rookies.

If Dallas kept Fasano, I'm sure they would have drafted another solid need player in the 2nd.

Too often teams try to assemble a collection of stars and expect them to conquer the league. Many championships are won by assembling a cast of solid, underrated contributors who play within the team concept. A star is nice, but ask Eli Manning or Chase Utley or Paul Pierce about role-players.

January 4, 2009  11:51 AM ET

Couldn't happen to a better team.

Just because they contributed on the Dolphins doesn't mean they would have done the same in Dallas. Dallas was three deep at tight end with, can be argued the one all time great tight ends, Witten, Curts, and a good rookie, Bennett. Same can be said about Ayodele. Miami was lacking in those areas, apparently.

Disagree here A. Bennett is a good TE and will be a great TE. He has a mentor in Witten.

It looks like the running game is back in D. They desparately need it. What is your opinion on Barber staying around now? I know they signed him to a big contract but I wonder if there's a clause to allows him to be released?

The Dolphins set out to build their roster from the bottom up, not from the top down with overpriced under-performing prima donnas (see:Jets, Cowboys).

The difference here is the Cowboys already had the talent. Miami had to build it. And, face it, they are not a playoff caliber team yet. Squeaked into the playoffs at the expense of the Patriots.
