Raiders deny ownership, Gilbride reports

Raiders owner Al Davis has not technically interviewed anyone for the head-coaching job yet, and he most certainly is not selling off his Pride and Poise. That's the company line, and team officials couldn't put it any more forcefully on a Sunday full of denials and clarifications to multiple national reports regarding the team's future. The team's strongest words were aimed at ESPN's Chris Mortensen, who reported Davis is negotiating a deal that could sell off a controlling interest of his franchise. "Chris' report is not true," Raiders chief executive Amy Trask said. "We are not negotiating with this group. We know who they are and that they want to purchase the controlling interest in a team. This team is not available to them." The team gave some ground on an NFL Network report that Davis spoke with Giants offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride by phone Saturday. Team executive John Herrera was willing to meet the network only halfway about what appeared to be a job interview for the head-coaching vacancy.

Why anyone would want to work for Al Davis is beyond me.

January 5, 2009  07:56 AM ET

ANYONE can be bought!

If he throws enough $$$$ at someone they'll take the job.

Which is worse: working for Al Davis or Jerry Jones? I'm surprised that isn't a Throwdown topic yet.

I'd say Al Davis. The Cowboys have more talent, ignoring the drama that we get to read about daily or weekly or whatever. The Raiders have looked like a Black Hole (like their stadium nickname or whatever) for a long time and I don't know when that ship will be righted, though I have to thank them for a great game vs. Tampa Bay to help get my Eagles into the playoffs. They do look like they have some good RBs to build a running-based attack around. But right now I'd rather work for Jones.

No sale? Great, we stay in the pit then... Just as I was collecting some hope too.

January 5, 2009  08:41 AM ET

He needs to sell all interest and get out of the game. He is a dark mark that needs to be removed if the Raiders are ever going to be competative again.

Exactly....please Al sell all of your stake in this team, and start playing bingo...the game has passed him by

At this point the Raiders should just offer Cable an extension. They finished strong, for the Raiders, with him in charge. What they need right now is stability at the HC position. Bringing in yet another HC would just delayed the maturation of Russel one more year.

I agree that we should offer Cable an extension... I mean lets be honest.... Gilbride and Robiskie are not exactly names... That would have me any more hopeful than the guy who is already in place... Man it sucks to be us... For the last 5 friggin years

Exactly, Gilbride is a very good OC for the G-men and even dating back to the Warren Moon years in Houston (Oilers) but he doesnt scream HEADCOACH!
Let Cable stay and start some form of continuity in Oakland.
With the AFC West being as weak as it is now, the Raiders really are not far from contending again. With a few more solid draft picks this year and SMART free agent signings they could be a surprise team next year.

Exactly. Throwing head coaches under the bus every 1.5 seasons only gets you more horror stories about coaching the Raiders.

Kenny Stabler where have you gone?

January 5, 2009  03:44 PM ET

What was the price on Amy Trask's integrity? Anyone know?

Al Easy... But if either one wants to throw some crazy jack around, both me and my integrity are for sale...

I thought Al Davis was dead? The Munsters haven't had new episodes on TV in about 40 years.

Everyone forgets the Raiders were in the Super Bowl in 2002, when was Dallas there last?? 1995 and Dallas is way overratted with talent right now, Jamarcus and Mcfadden will be very good very soon.......
