The tenure of embattled Green Bay Packers defensive coordinator Bob Sanders is over, according to an Internet report posted Sunday night but not confirmed by the club. Sanders did not return a pair of phone messages left after the National Football Post reported that coach Mike McCarthy had fired him. McCarthy was unavailable for comment and various members of the organization, including several offensive and defensive starters, said they had not heard a word about Sanders' status. The National Football Post is a Web site owned by Andrew Brandt, former Packers vice president of player finance, and agent Jack Bechta, whose clients include cornerback Al Harris. Former Packers safety Matt Bowen is also a regular contributor to the site. The report posted on the Post's main page consisted of two lines stating only that the site had been informed that Sanders had been fired. It did not include a byline and there was no detail about when the firing occurred.

Some has to take the blame right?

might as well be someone that nobody knows!

Happy New Year all!! I hardly saw any Packers games on TV this year but all I ever saw in analysis and commentaries is that the main problem with the Packers this season is that the defence was bad or couldn't tackle. If that's the case, a change is needed. Aaron Rodgers didn't look too bad.

January 5, 2009  08:06 AM ET

Yes! This needed to be done. The defense fell off so bad after the season before last and it was the biggest downfall of the Packers this year, right ahead of punting. Hopefully the Packers can find a good replacement who can turn the defense around from such a disappointing year.

heard their interviewing buddy ryan to whip that defense back into shape

January 5, 2009  08:43 AM ET

this is a good thing.

And why can't the Bears get rid of Babych, their inept D-Co? And Turner, their inept O-Co? And Angelo their inept GM? Because they don't have the balls at Hallas Hall! That's why!

they need to fire Brett Farve!!!!!!

I don't think Jerry's going anywhere, but Babich & Turner do have to go.

Why did they wait this long to make this move? With a weak division, that the Pack once led, they should have cut this guy loose when the defense was leaking water, before it flat out collapsed. Too little, too late. At least you got to play the Lions twice.

For Packer fans, this was welcome news. The Pack couldn't hold a lead most of the season and the defense was the main reason for the 4th quarter collapses. Now we can move on.

January 5, 2009  12:53 PM ET

I don't know why they are keeping McCarthy. He should be sent packing too. He has lost too many home games.

The lack of a pass rush / depth on the defensive needs to be addressed as well as the age of Harris and Woodson at the corners. They're not done yet, but that day is coming in a couple of years. May as well prepare for the inevitable or possible injuries.

Wonder how muchj of a fart in church it would be to try and bring Jim Bates back?? He had considerable success as coordinator of the Pack's defense before he was shunned for the head coaches job. Not likely, but it's a thought.

January 5, 2009  02:33 PM ET

Its about time. Now we need to adopt the 3-4 defense.

January 5, 2009  03:37 PM ET

WOW! This should help them get off the schnied...

January 5, 2009  04:28 PM ET

This is a good start but the real problems - McCarthy & Thompson are still there ready to make the Packers into Detroit Jr.

January 5, 2009  04:32 PM ET

Who, from outside the organization, are the speculated candidates?

If a new coordinator turns things around for the defense, does that give McCarthy an extra year or two?
