Gauging Braves' interest in Lowe, Jones

To say the Braves have absolutely zero interest in Derek Lowe and Andruw Jones wouldn't exactly be accurate. But their interest in these two players currently appears to be only moderate. For this interest to increase, Lowe's cost is going to have to drop and Jones is going to have to gain his expected release from the Dodgers. But even if Jones is released, there shouldn't be any assumptions that he'll be able to celebrate a homecoming. The Braves have numerous concerns about their former center fielder and likely wouldn't be willing to provide him anything more than a minimum salary. In their prolonged search to land a frontline starting pitcher, the Braves are at least now keeping tabs on Lowe, who is also reportedly generating interest from the Mets, Angels, Phillies and Red Sox. But like some of these other teams, the Braves aren't interested in providing Lowe the $16 million annual salary that he's believed to be seeking. In fact, it doesn't seem like the Braves would be willing to better the rejected three-year, $36 million offer the Mets recently made to Lowe, who stands as the most attractive starting pitcher remaining on the free-agent market.

I haven't followed the Braves much. I know everyone can always use more and better pitching, but if they think they are a contender or close to being one, signing Lowe to a reasonable contract makes sense. Then again, I am sure we are going to hear that Lowe is going to almost every team in the Majors until he finally picks a team.

Kidd, get that chick a couple of cheeseburgers before the wind blows her away.

Braves need to do SOMETHING for their pitching situation after completely blowing the Peavy situation after he basically fell in their lap.

Nah she looks just fine as she is.

I totally agree with that statement.....the Braves have not done very well this offseason. And acquiring Vazquez only puts a 'band-aid' on the problem. We still need quality starters.

If the Braves resign Jones, they deserve a thousand years of locust and hot coals!!!!!!!!!!

They did not blow that Towers did, wanting juat a little more, he got way to greedy on his demand

Braves do need a starter still. Lowe seems to be the most rumored to sign with them unless those Peavy talks renew themselves.

It looks like Frank Wren is GM-ing in the Phil Jackson style of coaching. Basically he's just sitting on the bench and watching it all unfold. I don't think that's going to get in done, unfortunately. Unless something gives (and Andruw Jones is NOT the answer), it's going to be a tough few years for us Braves fans.

Roll the dice on Sheets. After dealing with Hampton, I can handle another pitcher on the DL for most of the year. Hell....take a chance....big upside.

January 5, 2009  02:11 PM ET

Towers blew the Peavy trade, not the Braves. Ask the Cubs how freakin greedy Towers was....

And you can get him on a 2 year contract more then likely.
