Reds interested in Andruw Jones?

There are reports that the Los Angeles Dodgers have negotiated a deal for outfielder Andruw Jones to defer much of the $22 million he's owed. The move reportedly would save the Dodgers $12 million this season, and bring his salary down to the $5 million range. The Dodgers hope that would make the right-handed hitter tradeable. But if the Dodgers would release the .158 hitter, he could be had for the $400,000 minimum. ESPN's Buster Olney reported that the Reds were among the clubs that had some interest in Jones earlier, and it stands to reason the Dodgers would contact the Reds again. Reds beat writer John Fay still doesn't see Jones in a Reds uniform - even if he pays them $400,000. The reasons: The Reds signed Willy Taveras to play center. Jones is a center fielder. Jones is only going to want to come to a club where he's going to start. The Reds would be silly to make that promise. He was very unhappy on the bench at the end of last year.

Bring on the fat jokes!

He really does need to lose some weight. I remember when he was this skinny kid playing at the fresh Turner Field hitting homeruns and running down line drives all over the field. Now he just kind of lumbers around the outfield and he's only getting around the bases if the ball is either over the fence or dropped on an Error.

He's really deteriorated, but the skill set is still there if he would re-dedicate himself to conditioning and practice.

why can't players have a return policy.... didn't work out, didn't like him anymore, return him to where he came from... the Braves can have him back....they suck all the time with or without him

What is their interest? A pie eating contest?

January 5, 2009  10:58 AM ET

What's even funnier is if he thinks he is going to go somewhere and start, I don't think any team will take that chance and you know if he doesn't start that will make him unhappy and if he is unhappy he might not play well.

And might eat more, wait, he might play well under any circumstances?

He's been on the interstate for 2 years and couldn't get himself motivated for a contract year. I wouldn't go near the guy

Agreed!! he looks absolutely horrible at the plate. his defense may still be above avg. but most ball clubs are expecting at least half way decent productivity from their CF position.

Maybe if he cared more about his weight and at least pretended that he wanted to do better, he'd have more teams thinking about signing him....He stunk last year and his weight is still up and he' not playing well in winter ball...who wants him?
