Delfino back on Raptors' radar

Carlos Delfino is back on the Raptors' radar. During a halftime interview yesterday, general manager Bryan Colangelo, without provocation, mentioned the swingman's name as a possibility. Delfino left the Raptors last season as a restricted free agent, bolting to Russian club team Khimki BC in what is believed to be a three-year deal worth $12 million US. The Raptors can match any offer by opposing NBA clubs for Delfino, who emerged as a very productive reserve in his only season in Toronto. Colangelo traded second-round picks in 2009 and 2011 to Detroit to acquire Delfino, who averaged 9.0 points, 4.4 rebounds and 1.8 assists as a Raptor. Colangelo is prepared to match any offer, even though the Raptors are walking a thin line with regards to the league's tax threshold.

Lets get serious, is he gonna help them win more games? Probably not. He isn't a player that comes in and scores 25, he's a role player. They need a proven scorer in the shape of a swingman. Delfino is a nice player but he isn't gonna turn the Raptors around. The Raptors are in trouble, and Bosh will leave in 2010 unless they do something soon.

Things not working out so well in Russia for him?

I couldn't agree more.

I like this kids game he just never really got quality starter minutes, his game reminds me of Drazen Petrovichs (spelling) from the Nets.

January 5, 2009  09:57 AM ET

Solid player. Not a game changer though and the Raps need to do something to get it turned around.

January 5, 2009  10:15 AM ET

Defino is NOTHING like what Petro was with the Nets. Petro had all star ability whereas at most Delfino has 6th man skills.

This trade scenario should be explored by TOR:

- Oneal & Moon & Solomon & Jawai & ??09 1st pick and ??10 2nd pick for Felton & Wallace & Mohammed & May & Brown (CHA)

CHA gets the post presence Brown is seeking to ease Okafor, a replacement for Wallace and Felton and the 2 valuable picks. Plus Cap space for 2010. Oneal by the way, will benefit from the slow pace of Brown wich would be greatly improved with his presence too.
TOR would not only widen its offense but would improve its defense with Wallace around. They also get a combo guard that can come off the bench as the offensive spark and adds 2 big men to their liable forntcourt. They still get cap space for next year.

They NEED a 2 guard BADLY.
Delfino is NOT a major upgrade.

January 5, 2009  11:24 AM ET

to Lordgohan's trade proposal:

-really?...so if you were larry brown, you'd accept that trade? you'd give up wallace and felton (essentially) for Oneal and moon? why would charlotte need more picks when they'll get a better one anyway from their own bad record?

January 5, 2009  02:20 PM ET

What?? Why?? What can he possibly do for TOR?

January 5, 2009  04:33 PM ET

If they are indeed considering Delfino, why not get Josh Childress from greece?? Much better rebounder, defender and a solid presence in the locker room.

You're absolutely right. And basketball in Toronto must not be setting the world on fire if their top story is about Carlos Delfino, who is a decent 8th man AT BEST. Getting him MIGHT get them 5 victories.

Delfino was good for them...played the 2, 3, and even a bit at point as needed when TJ went down. He's got a bit of a nasty streak in him at times as well, and that's what this team needs, barring the obvious need for a wing scorer. The Raps are NOT going into luxury tax territory, so barring a trade, this is all they really can do.

January 6, 2009  07:19 AM ET

Delfino also attacks the rim on a regular basis, which is very rare for a Toronto Raptor.

In the interview it was mentioned that the Russian team is having money trouble. Colangelo said they've had trouble paying players on time, although he specificaly said that none of Delfino's payments have been late.. yet.

I like Delfino and I hope they can bring him back. He is not going to be the team's saviour, but he is certainly going to be usefull compared to most of their bench.

He's a useful piece because he defends and can shoot the 3. But he is a bench player. The Raptors need a couple of starter quality athletic wings to be taken seriously.
