When the Associated Press announced its annual Coach of the Year award on Sunday, the breakdown of votes went like this: Mike Smith 23.5, Tony Sparano 22.5, Jeff Fisher 4 and Bill Belichick 1. From a New England perspective, that led to the following question: Which one of the 50 voters selected Belichick? Turns out it was Bob Costas. In a phone interview with the Globe, Costas was asked about the vote. His answer was included in Tuesday's editions of the Boston Globe, and it's posted here as well: "I didn't think he would win, but I thought he deserved a nod for what might have been the best, or certainly one of the best coaching jobs of his career," Costas said. "He loses [Tom] Brady, and it's not just losing Brady, but also that [Matt] Cassel basically never played. It's not the same thing as losing Johnny Unitas and you have Earl Morrall. He brought the kid along."

The Patriots choked peoples. They had some boy attitudes that just did not get the job done with Brady. They like to cheat also and whoever voted for this man is just in love with him. It is love and love is a beautiful thing.

Matt Cassell hadn't started a game since high school. The All Pro goes down and nobody gives the Pats a chance for the rest of the season. The Patriots don't panic and make a knee-jerk reaction. they stick with the unheralded guy and it pays off. Cassell steps in and leads the Patriots to 11 wins. That was a well deserved vote to Belichick.

Where's the love for John Harbaugh? He's gotten further than any of this year's rookie head coaches.

I heard TO and Plax voted for him.

LOL!

He deserved a nod. Maybe not the actual award after Mike Smith and John Harbaugh, but losing the MVP, being down 3 running backs at different times during the year, defense decimated, well, to go 11-5 deserves a nod.

But the right coach got it this year.

I supposed there will be a bunch of morons today suggesting that Bob Costas doesn't know what he's talking about....

Yup, this guy here!!! There is a reason he was the ONLY one to vote for him....because he in fact has NO CLUE as to what he is talking about and is a vote only made with personal interest for a friend.

And he admits he's a moron.......

Friend? What makes you think he is a friend>? He was one of the more critical people when spygate came out. I guess you don't look at the facts.

I guess this season just plays into the fact that the system in NE made Bill look good. Oh wait.......

Seriously, big deal its one vote. While they didn't make the playoffs. 11-5 is a pretty damn good record. In most seasons, that enough to get to the playoffs. When you look back at all the years of superstar QBs getting injured early in the season, that usually meant your season was over. Let's count them(over the past few years), Culpepper, Testaverde, Palmer, McNabb(with exception of the Jeff Garcia season) and can even go so far as saying Romo's injury this year plagued his team.

PURE TRASH!!!

But anyway, It was a deserved vote. If you saw Cassel in pre-season and in scrub time before then you saw that he really couldn't do much against anybody. but he improved leaps and bounds this year under Belichick.

January 6, 2009  08:29 AM ET

Costas made a good vote, it was a tough year, and the award really could have gone to 3-4 coaches.

January 6, 2009  08:39 AM ET

So Bellicheat deserves the credit when it was Cassel who stepped up to be the man after Brady went down? Costas...you blow.

I expected this response from a "Cheatriot" homer....you trying tell me he had a better season than Sporano, Smith, Fisher or even Harbaugh??? You are out of your freakin mind!! He got beat out by 2 ROOKIE coaches in the votes and not by a slim margin.
