Hull: No remorse over Avery deal

Brett Hull says he would do it again. Well, not so much sign Sean Avery to a four-year contract, but take a chance on a guy he thought would be a good fit for the organization. "I don't really have any remorse, because all I was trying to do was make our team better," said Hull, half of the general manager tandem that remains the only split GM position in professional sports. "That, to me, is the essence of the job." Hull understands he is more publicly recognized than partner Les Jackson. And he understands the criticism levied at him after the acquisition of Avery blew up only 23 games into his first season with the Dallas Stars. But he has a question for critics who say that he doesn't work hard enough, that he hasn't paid his dues, that he doesn't understand the intricacies of the job and too often fires first and aims later. "I guess I would just like to ask them what my job is," Hull said. "Because I really don't think people on the outside know."

Just because Brett had to chew his arm of the morning after doesn't mean he should have any regrets. ;)

Every GM tryies to make the team better Brett. Gord Stellick thought he was making the team "better" when trading Russ Courtnall for John Kordic. Not too many people agreed and he was fired shortly after. A stupid move is a stupid move... just please own up to it, you arrogant preeeeck.

January 6, 2009  08:17 AM ET

So where is Avery now? Is he even playing anywhere?

January 6, 2009  09:38 AM ET

Avery didn't blow up; the Stars blew up. And Avery is their temporary scapegoat.

January 6, 2009  09:44 AM ET

Completely understandable trying to make your team better but signing a guy with a known track record of being out there for his own edification was one of those "What the heck were you thinking?!" Like the posters above said: just admit your mistake and move on.

January 6, 2009  09:57 AM ET

Brett doesn't ever admit that he's wrong........

I agree from an opposite perspective. When the Habs gave up Kordic for Courtnall I dumped them.

What did anyone expect him to say?
"Oh yeah, I screwed up royally thinking that a guy with the rep he has would be anything more or less than that when he got here"
This is a stupid piece of "news"

I agree with OTHER ONE....the team needed an explanation for playing like 4 sacks of cr*pola

January 6, 2009  10:57 AM ET

The dallas Stars + or - Avery = the same old Dallas Stars !!!

January 6, 2009  11:31 AM ET

Hull new exactly what he was getting in Avery. Everybody did. So he took a gamble on him and lost. He asks what people think his job is. Well as I see it, he's the GM trying to weasel his way out of taking responsibility for signing a ticking time bomb. To a four year contract no less!

As I see it, he's the GM who took a chance on a ticking time bomb. To a four year contract no less! If Avery would have been a success he would have taken ALL the credit. Believe me.

Sorry, double submit.

Hull would not be the first ex player in the NHL to fail at the General Managers position, there are only a few that have been an exception to the Rule. That is all I have to say about that, because we do not really know the Politics inside these organizations, but if you do not Win, you should be looking for another Career and Dallas is not Winning.

even when he admits he DID something wrong...as in kicking in a Stanley Cup winning goal.....

Many sports figures that were great on the field of play wer enot so good behind the bench, etc. I would be hard pressed, (though I'm sure someone will remind me!) to think of anyone that had big success in both venues.

I bet on Brett's hunch...he has great intuition. Avery is an excellent player....and had a great opportunity to improve a team in need. However, he chose not to be a team player in Dallas as he was very much so in NY. Sometimes things don't work out. Not Brett's fault...

very good point

Brett Hull thought managing was like playing the game. You know, score the cup winning goal with your toe in the crease and all that's left is to celebrate!

I agree. How can Brett be responsible for what Avery says to the press? If Avery cut a fart during an interview would that be Brett's fault too? Brett knew he had to make sacrifices just to compete with the Sharks and Wings. The whole team stinks as of right now (so do my beloved Pens though), and they were stinking while he was with them.

I've done a few things in my life that were stupid and I had no remorse for doing them, but that doesn't necessarily mean I haven't taken responsibility for it. And even if Brett said sorry you haters would just bash him even more.

Detroit trading for an aging bernie federko and giving up some young kid named Adam Oates, now that was a bad move!
