Crabtree seeing specialist for ankle injury

The father of Texas Tech's Michael Crabtree said his son is seeking a specialist to figure out why the star receiver's nagging right high ankle sprain hasn't healed. Crabtree sustained the injury during the Nov. 29 regular-season finale against Baylor. Despite ample treatment from the Red Raiders' medical staff, he was still hobbling and ineffective during Friday's 47-34 Cotton Bowl loss to Mississippi. The elder Crabtree said his son probably won't decide whether to declare for the NFL Draft until the Jan. 15 deadline. Tech coach Mike Leach said it would be in Crabtree's best interest to return to the Red Raiders next season.

WHAT? it would be in the best interest of leach and the red raiders for him to return. his stock is solidified as the 1st WR off the board and will be poss a top 10 pick. he's not going to riise any higher than that and with harrell leaving who's going to get him the ball next season? leach should be ashamed of himself

He definitely needs to resolve the ankle injury situation before declaring for the draft; otherwise the WR from UNC might be first off the board. But, i admit a healthy Crabtree would be my first choice.

Whoa... I like Mikey.... but in no way does it seem to me to be in Crab's best interest to return..

January 6, 2009  09:56 AM ET

I think Coach Leach sounds selfish here. This is like Dean Smith telling Michael Jordan he should stay in school.

January 6, 2009  09:57 AM ET

Coach Leach is being selfish. Crabtree would be a top-10 pick. This is like Dean Smith telling MJ he should have stayed.

January 6, 2009  10:14 AM ET

Man oh man... I read that part... And damn near fainted.... If Leach truly thinks it is in Crabtree's best interest to stay.... They need to drug test him

If he's going to see a specialist, not good. His draft stock will fall. He should stay until next year.

January 6, 2009  10:48 AM ET

Pirate talk inverts pronouns. Translated to English - "It would be in MY best interest if Crabtree returns to the Red Raiders next season, arrrrr!"

BTW, "Guns Up" was a sign of surrender in the old west.

January 6, 2009  10:54 AM ET

Ahh - just rub some mud on it and the sprain will go away.

January 6, 2009  10:55 AM ET

Better yet Mr. Crabtree try LeBron James famous "crab dribble" that should cure it !!!

January 6, 2009  12:56 PM ET

Crabtree should go pro. No GH to throw to him next year. and what if he really hurts his ankle...he should hit it now...

January 6, 2009  01:46 PM ET

Apparently Leach has fallen off the wagon.

January 6, 2009  05:38 PM ET

Taylor Potts who is 6'5" 215 lbs will be throwing the ball at TTech next year. He doesn't have Harrell's accuracy but has much better arm strength and his accuracy will come the more he knows the system. So there will be a decent QB around to throw the ball and lets not forget that the three QBs in front of Harrell, all threw for over 4,700 yds a season without having good arms or accuracy.

Point being, Crab will have plenty of footballs coming his way if he decides to return. TTech will not win against Texas and Mobilehoma unless they can find some corners and LBs.

He should go. No rookie cap this year.

January 6, 2009  07:21 PM ET

He is only a sophomore and is damaged goods. I will contend he actually got hurt during the A&M game on a kick-off return . . . the high ankle sprain happened to be on that same ankle. he was NEVER the same after the A&M game.

I have said this many times -- Mike Leach is concerned about the players graduating from college since they are student athletes. Crabtree is talented, but he is one hit in the NFL away from being another uneducated former athlete.

well ... glad to see you can google wikipedia ... almost word for word ...

just one fallacy ... his arm strength is much better, his accuracy is damn good, despite the claims of the article ... his draw back ... experience and he's not nearly as quick footed as Harrell ... he's more of a proto type qb ... Crab could use another year, he's only played wide receiver since coming to Tech ... he was a qb in hs

can't argue the defense ... need bigger d line too ...

but I will say, if he goes, he'll probably go in the top 10 ...

If you're not a Tech fan, you obviously know Crabtree is best to leave. If he falls past my Browns at #5 I will **** a brick.

January 7, 2009  06:45 AM ET

ho ho ho. ****. Leach, you magnificent ****, you have spun another golden nugget.

Hoo hoo hoo. yes, that 10 million signing bonus? He'll just blow that on cars and funny hats until you finish educating him, right? Stay another year; risk further injury. Money move. Just ask your coach. he's more than a coach....he's a friend with unbiased advice.
