Daly's suspension blow to tourney

07:58 AM ET 01.06 | The John Daly bandwagon has a broken axle for now. Long John, for a lot of reasons in a lot of places, has worn out his welcome in professional golf. But the reaction to his recent six-month suspension by the PGA Tour is not a favorable one in all precincts. Gerald Goodman, tournament director of the Tampa-based Transitions Championship (Mar. 19-22) says the loss of Daly to his field is a financial blow. "Yes, I'm disappointed," Goodman told GolfChannel.com. "John Daly is a draw. Our fans have related to him." And, yes, Goodman said, Daly's absence will affect The Transitions at the gate. Daly had asked for and received a sponsor's exemption to Goodman's event. But Goodman said he had heard "hints" that a suspension might be coming. That suspicion was confirmed when Daly phoned Goodman to apologize for not being able to play in his tournament. "John has a history at our event," Goodman said. Daly is a former mixed team event winner in Tampa where he paired with Laura Davies to capture the JC Penney Classic in 1999. Daly also has another kind of history in Tampa. Last year at Goodman's event he returned from a rain delay with Tampa Bay Buccaneers coach Jon Gruden on his bag. More recently Daly spent a night in jail in North Carolina after being arrested, basically for public drunkenness. Despite these incidents sources say Daly remains "friendly" with Hooters, the restaurant/bar chain that has served as one of his sponsors. Two Hooters' executives are on Goodman's tournament board of directors in Tampa. Goodman, by the way, wants to make it clear that he is not criticizing the Tour's action to suspend Daly.

As a golf fan i am so sick of the Daly crap. Until this Alcoholic faces up to his problem he will continue downhill and just be a CANCER to the tour.

This highlights what people have been saying for a long time.
It takes the commissioner to remove Daly from the tournament sponsors' grasp. They are interested in greasing their pockets and couldn't care less that Daly is a pox on the game's integrity and overall moral health.
This is one of the best things that Tim Finchem has done during his watch.
Something else that's needed is a stricture which limits anyone who doesn't have a card from playing from week to week as though they did have their card. If it was left to the tournament sponsors Daly would be playing every week and that's not fair to other players who have to earn their right to play.
This is something only the commish can regulate. Let Daly pick five tournaments for a year and that's all he gets. Then he can spend more time at home and think about how far his values have taken him.

Who cares is Gerald Goodman suffers for not having Daly at his tournament?
No one.
This ban is good for the sport. It's the best thing Tim Finchem has done and he deserves high praise for it.
There is more that needs to be done in Daly's case: anyone who doesn't have his tour card needs to be limited to a handful (like five) sponsor's exemptions per year. That's it.
Then he can spend more time at home reflecting on his redneck right-wing hick moral values.

With Daly suspended, golf will continue its downward spiral (if it could get any lower).

Finally Finchem Fires First! (say that three times fast). It's about time he tried to do something about Daly (the unprofessional, professional). This is a great first move.
Go Finchem. If he somehow manages to staty awake he could actually become a commissioner afterall.

It's no surprise Daly is popular in the Tampa Bay area - an area most famous for pro football and drunken street parties (Gasparilla and Guavaween). Living here is like living in a cultural state of limbo.
Go ahead; yell and scream that I should go back to wherever it is I came from - won't make Tampa any less of a wannabe "big city".
