Former Giants coach Jim Fassel is among the candidates the Rams could interview for their head-coaching vacancy this week. General manager Billy Devaney received clearance over the weekend to speak with Ravens defensive coordinator Rex Ryan, Vikings defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier, Dolphins secondary coach Todd Bowles and Cowboys wide receivers coach Ray Sherman.

fassel is a decent head coach but i thought they'd want a defensive minded coach

January 6, 2009  08:31 AM ET

It's unfortunate Fassel is remembered for his last years in the Giants organization. The man was voted Coach of the Year in 1997, went to the postseason in 3 of his 7 seasons, and took the Giants to the Superbowl in 2000. The guy is an offensive minded & players coach.

I wouldn't mind Fassel.......but I agree that I think they'll go defensive minded.......

January 6, 2009  10:16 AM ET

Fassel may be a potential coach for the Rams. But they need someone who ids going to make it a priority to stop teams from running over them in the fourth quarter. What a mess this team is. From 1999 Super Bowl champs to these chumps. Bring back Roman Gabriel. He'd make a mockery of the spineless Bulger even Roman's age. What a **** Bulger is. the new coach should make Bulger cut the lawn at Ram's Park at training camp.

I agree that Bulger has been one of the bigger disappointments I've seen in STL over the last few years. I was a Warner fan and didn't necessarily agree with Warner being pushed out for Bulger, but at the same time I thought Bulger would be a top tier NFL QB. He's played like that at times, but has shown a lack of heart and leadership at times.

I think a lot of Bulger's problems stem from the beatings he's taken from the offensive play calling and the poor O-line over the years.

I like Jim Fassel, good man, good coach, last time I checked New Joisy-ites, he did take your team to a Super Bowl. But Fassel is a little desperate. He's got his name on every job including dog catcher (which might have been of some benefit a couple years ago in Atlanta...).

January 6, 2009  12:39 PM ET

If someone doesn't give Rex Ryan a chance as Head Coach they are making a mistake.

January 6, 2009  01:56 PM ET

Fassel would be ok and a clear improvement. He made it to a Super Bowl with Kerry Collins. I support him much more for HC than some untested coordinator from Green Bay, Minnesota, or Miami. But why is everyone ignoring Brian Billick? This guy won a Super Bowl convincingly with Trent Dilfer as QB. He also made it to the playoffs several times with crushing defenses. And a lot of Baltimore's recent success can be attributed to the pieces he put in motion.

January 6, 2009  07:40 PM ET

I said this a month ago. Can't stand the guy because of the kind of person he is, never could. I followed every interview he ever gave for years as a Giants fan, and was ecstatic to see him leave. That being said, he would do as well or better with the Rams, or Raiders, as any name mentioned. He is the safe choice. A true blue lap dog.

January 6, 2009  08:40 PM ET

50yearfan, could you explain "the kind of person he is". Not living in NY/NJ, I don't know many details about him.

January 6, 2009  09:06 PM ET

Good for jimmy. With the right staff he is a good coach, with the wrong staff he is just plain bad. When he had John Fox and Sean Payton (two current HCs) he lead the Giants to a Super Bowl. With Jonny Lynn and Himself calling the plays he got fired. One good thing he would do for the Rams is revive Marc Bulgers Career.

He is totally about him. Selfish. Always took bows when things went right, and never accepted responsibility when things went bad.
Would always say stupid things like, " Yeah, I told them about that" Priceless . When teams first inquired about Fox ( his DC then and the reason for their success) he laughed at the idea the guy could ever be a HC. See Carolina now. Without Fox, whom he gave no credit, he was nothing.
He was supposed to be an offensive guru, he was a mess. Gave the job to Sean Payton. Payton put them on the only offensive run they had at the time. Taught them how to go after it. One bad game and he demotes Payton, says he is going to take over play calling. They run Paytons playbook ( he wrote the whole thing) gets hot, wins a few games and is back bowing again.
His own players said they were NOT prepared for the Ravens in that Superbowl. And they were right. He kissed up to Tiki and Strahan for years to be liked in the locker room. See what that did for them. The whole team quit on him the last four games he coached in NY. And I mean QUIT.
It took Coughlin to clean out the locker room of Tiki and a few others who had been running that asylum. Call it tough love.
Hey, when in college he got his later to be wife pregnant, gave the kid away because it got in the way of his career plans. Look it up.
A self serving Jerk. Always was. I could go on for hours, but you get the idea....A professional A** Kisser..The best.
There, I feel better. lol.
