Another name popped up Monday: Stanford coach Jim Harbaugh, who played quarterback at Michigan and spent time with the Lions before the 2001 season. Nationalfootballpost.com listed the Lions as one of three teams interested in him. Lions officials have said they will not confirm candidates.

thank ur brother jimbo!

Why not hire ANOTHER coach with NO head coaching experience? This would be a typical Lions move.

January 6, 2009  07:37 AM ET

Jim Harbaugh would have to be certifiably insane to have any interest in the Detroit Lion HC job.

January 6, 2009  07:41 AM ET

Jim HArbaugh will have shown he took too many hits to the head if he opts to leave Stanford for the Lions HC job. Jim Tressel should take the job since he's probably persona non grata in ColumbASS right now. OSU, The Best Damn Chokers in College Football!

Cohwer, Shanahan, Billick, Mangini - good candidates...(hence lions have not interviewed them)

Harbaugh, Mayhew's former teammates, the secondary coach from the Redskins, Jason Garrett (the guy who had the most under performing offense in the league) - Lion's candidates

January 6, 2009  07:53 AM ET

Please no....aren't Backus (UM), Rogers (MSU), Stanton (MSU), and probably Schweigart (Saginaw Heritage) enough...not to mention all the GVSU and SVSU guys that have made pit-stops here......let's go OUTSIDE of the Michigan family on this one.

Sorry Detroit...I can really feel your pain. No HC experience is not a big deal, steelers have done very well with their last 3 coaches which had none. But with the way the Lions' fans have been suffering, the ownership should step up and hire a proven GM and Coach.

January 6, 2009  08:43 AM ET

Hey why not interview Lloyd Carr?

if the lions dont screw the draft up they should be considerably better next year....how can u not be considerably better than 0-16 i know, but they have a #1 WR already, RB is pretty straight, and some nice young pieces at various positions, keep pep and he's gonna start for u next yr, pick the best QB available w/ #1 pick, i think BRADFORD if he comes out, if he doesnt STAFFORD, then get a solid CB with ur 2nd number 1 and then go from there....

bim - you hit it on the head. The Lions could find a way to **** this up, even though now is the BEST time to fix up this team with all the picks this draft. Hell, I'd even say trade the # 1 pick for two other picks & a player if they could.

GET A REAL COACH that will fill the holes they have already. Then work on changing the attitude of the team.

Thanks Mr. Detroit Lions Man but I already have a job.

Sincerely,

Jimbo

This would be a great hire to ensure stability in that franchise.....if you're happy with how things are going that is....

January 6, 2009  10:18 AM ET

I am a little surprised by the Harbaugh bashing... I think the guy will make a terrific NFL Head Coach

January 6, 2009  10:43 AM ET

The Wolverines should have hired Jim when they had the chance. I fear that the Lions will not be able to attract what they need in a head coach due to the ineptitude and inexperience of the front office. The only candidates who would be interested are college coaches, assistant coaches and failed former head coaches. It is so sad.

Terry Bowden!

Remember when he was touted as the second coming of Jimmy Johnson? Give Buster Brown another coaching shot before he turns into a medicine ball with ears.

January 6, 2009  10:46 AM ET

It is not so much Harbaugh as it is not wanting another unproven coach. Give me a retread that had success at one point in their life....a quarterback would help too, but not with the #1 pick.

I agree with you, but wait for a better job to become available.

By better job, do you mean head coach or coordinator? Because if he is looking for a head coaching job in the NFL, the Lions are the best he can hope for.
