Veteran NASCAR crew chief Tommy Baldwin believes he sees an opportunity in the sport's current economic climate, so he announced Tuesday that he is starting a new Sprint Cup team in 2009. The team will be based in Mooresville, N.C., and operate under the Tommy Baldwin Racing banner. Baldwin said the team plans to run full-time in the Cup Series using Toyota cars and engines from Arrington Manufacturing. Baldwin, 41, did not name a driver or a sponsor.

TBR sounds like a team that will be replacing "Hall of Fame" racing filling in the final rows. I know racing is a passion and something that really digs into you, but when you have teams like Roush, Gibbs and Hendrick out there with the massive R&D owning the circuit, is it really lucrative nowadays to actually start a team unless you have a HUGE backing and some sort of extra support? Does NASCAR have any type of revenue sharing program in place....that in itself would almost make it worth it considering how much bread they bring in on a single weekend.

Lots and lots of spare cars, drivers and crews around.

What if Toyota subsidizes this team, they can experiment on set ups and if the car doesn't do well, no one knows any different as it wasn't expected to do well anyway. By experiment, I mean things that might be in the grey area, like a little cheating. This could be invaluable to the upper tier teams at a later race. Just saying

Behave yourself Dr.
And go for it Tommy, go cheap and make some money and prove the big teams blow.

January 7, 2009  11:23 AM ET

I wish him well but there are obviously a few details missing to this story.
JK's suggestion could explain it.

No sponsor and no driver? Hmmm.

I'd like to announce that I am starting a NASCAR Cup team to race in the 2009 season.
We'll be racing Mini Coopers, out of my rented garage in downtown Annapolis.
I'll name a sponsor and a driver later.
A lot later.

Think you nailed it JK! The only 'downside' to that would be Tommy's reputation. The guy's pretty hardcore..but a financed Cup team might be worth the price. Sign on Bobby LaBonte and you've got at least 7 races 'in'.

Can I get Tommy's e-mail?, I'm looking for work! LOL

Doubtful Toyota will cough up as they just announced serious cuts to their racing budget in F1. While not withdrawing like Honda, the big bucks just won't be the same. Gotta admit, takes a lot of guts to launch a new team these days. I hear Petty might be looking LOL!! Can't wait to hear who the sponser is, Barry's Bail Bonds may have a dollar or two.

Oh yeah, Hawaii 5-0 rocks!
