Warriors: Nellie's job is safe

Despite the dismal start and consecutives losses to the two worst teams in the NBA this week, Warriors President Robert Rowell reiterated Monday that coach Don Nelson's job in not in jeopardy. Rowell's official support follows what has been understood since he awarded Nelson a two-year, $12 million extension this summer: Ownership wants the 68-year-old architect of its 2007 playoff team around, and to feel comfortable coaching in spite of his injury- and youth-filled roster.

At first I thought that this was crazy, them I remembered what they were before he got there.

I'm not a nellie fan-
there is a reason he has NEVER been to an NBA finals

January 7, 2009  09:10 AM ET

Of course Nellie's job is safe. It's Golden State. As long as they put up 120 points a night in losing efforts, no one really cares.

OK, let me be honest. He's not a bad coach. Yes, his teams do not play defense but he coaches an entertaining brand of basketball and his teams have the chance night in and night out to beat the best in the NBA. I wouldn't fire him at all.

January 7, 2009  09:59 AM ET

He is one of the best basketball minds in the NBA. Save a run to the Finals, the Cuban owned Mavs and Dirk have enjoyed their best success in the playoffs with him at the helm. I'm still a firm beliver in that you have to play some defense to have some success in the NBA and as mentioned above there is a reason why he hasn't been in the Finals.

Look for Nellie to end up Sprewelled before the season ends:) this guy is either the dumbest dude around or just plain arrogant, he acts like he's won several championships, he's no Phil Jackson or Pat Riley.

January 7, 2009  10:36 AM ET

Somebody has to coach 'em and he's willing to take the job.

'Nuff said.

January 7, 2009  11:25 AM ET

This team isn't built to win. It's been built to entertain the fans. Nelson's job is safe until someone decides to "go in another direction."

Exactly! Look at the players they put on the floor. Any coach would have a tough time with the lineup that they have.

January 7, 2009  12:22 PM ET

They suck and his system is bad. RUN AND GUN TEAMS NEVER WIN BIG! 'OFFENCE WINS GAMES, DEFENSE WINS TITLES' - IT IS PROVED YEAR IN YEAR OUT.

Nellies throwing up the Westside,

That was my first thought too. Made me do a double-take.

His job is fine as long as they win a few and ownership doesn't want to eat his salary.

Got that right! He's never been to the NBA nothing and never wiil.

January 7, 2009  05:51 PM ET

Plus Nelly like George Karl has an expiratiion date.

January 7, 2009  08:27 PM ET

Nelly is vastly overrated.

January 7, 2009  08:56 PM ET

Why does this story feature a picture of Boris Yeltsin?

January 8, 2009  12:22 AM ET

At the point that he fails miserably with any kind of lineup, I will join the detractors. He has made a lot of poor and mediocre teams better over his coaching career. Whose fault when a player fails, his or the coaches? It's not like he ever told anyone not to play defense. I'd say he's doing as well as can be expected presently, though a few more wins would be welcome.

heat : m.camby

clippers : j crawford

warriors : u.haslem and d wright

new starting lineups:

HEAT:

camby
marion
beasley
wade
chalmers

WARRIORS:

biedrins
haslem
jackson
maggette
ellis

CLIPPERS:

kaman
randolph
thornton
crawford
davis

the deal may go down when kaman and randolph return from injury so lets see in a couple of weeks

camby dosent fit the age bracket the clippers are builing upon so he will be the bigman traded out of the 3

the deal fixes 3 teams chemistry

camby is getting so many rebounds lately because there are no other bigs next to him dont let the inflated numbers fool you he is still a great rebounder though

the heats frontcourt is pathetic - camby is the perfect fit

the warriors cant play ellis and crawford togethor, ideally you can have one playing with a reverse guard - pg on offense and guarding the SG
