Nuggets looking to deal

Expect a Nuggets deal by the Feb. 19 trade deadline. But don't expect one any time soon in the wake of the broken hand that will sideline forward Carmelo Anthony three to four weeks. At least that's the word from coach George Karl. "My gut feeling is probably not,'' Karl said. A big man is a likely target, with the Nuggets keeping a close eye on Oklahoma City, where big men Chris Wilcox, Joe Smith and Nick Collison are available. The players wanted to be traded by Denver are guard Chucky Atkins and center Steven Hunter, who each have contracts that expire after next season.

Must be trade rumors day.

Now this is a deal the Mavs should try to get. Trade JHO and Diop for Nene and Hunter. That will surely work for both team right now. JHo will replace Carmelo for the 4 weeks he is not there and then they become best friends. Mavs get a low post monster. Yeah.

not a bad thought- Jho can move to the 2 when melo comes back
& The mave need some beef in the post - but lose a bunch of scoring

But- nene is signed for a long time....not sure if Dallas wants
another big deal on their books come 2010

Not a bad proposal. The Mavs should make that kind of move because I cannot see any of those Oklahoma City big men listed as being difference makers for the Nuggets.

Okay it said "Expect a Nuggets deal by the Feb. 19 trade deadline. But don't expect one any time soon" . . . . .isn't that still soon?

January 7, 2009  09:52 AM ET

I like the Josh Howard move to the Nuggets as well, but will Cuban pull the trigger to take back Nene's salary or any others to match in return?

January 7, 2009  11:01 AM ET

Carmelo Anthony is out and the Nuggets need someone else besides Chauncey Billups to carry the team into the postseason. With Anthony out 2 to 3 weeks, the Nuggets need to win games because the Spurs and the Lakers and the Blazers will be hard teams to catch up to so the Nuggets have to gain some ground before Carmelo comes back so they can make a strong playoff run when he returns to the team. The trade has to happen fast because the Nuggets will lose games without their star and it will be an important stretch with the toughness of the Western Conference teams and their ability to win ball games when they need to. This trade will happen because the Nuggets really need it for the time being until Carmelo Anthony returns.

Chucky Atkins is still in the league

What happened to Marcus Camby? Oh, that's right, he was dealt for nothing. Who's making these calls?

January 7, 2009  12:23 PM ET

Wilcox wants to leave the Thunder, and he'll be good in the Nuggets system. Joe Smith will want to go to a a real contender like Boston, Cleveland, San Antonio.

The Nuggets do not need JHO they have JR, Danhtay Jones(great signing by the nuggs) and Kleiza who are maybe not as good as JHO, but still I couldn't see a team having JR, JHO and Melo that would be a great freaking mess. And also why would the Nuggs want to trade Nene right now? he's finally playing like he's supposed to. I would say any of the 3 mentioned in this article makes perfect sense for the Nuggs, especially Wilcox and Collison. The front court needs some help. You never know kmart and nene could be hurt at anytime, and this year we dont have Najera to pick up the slack.

Why would the Nuggs want JHO when they have JR, Danhtay Jones (great pick up), Melo and Kleiza at the same position? Not to mention all the conflicting personalities they would have to put up with, and then if Melo, JHO, and JR started liking each other that would be even worse, trouble all the time. Plus there is no way they would trade Nene, he's actually living up to his potential right now. The three mentioned in this article, especially wilcox and collison, make perfect sense because at any time kmart and Nene could get hurt and we no longer have ol' reliable Najera to pick up the slack. Atkins and Hunter never play anyways and are always hurt. I hope chapman and warketin pull this deal.

yeah, I didn't think my first post actually got posted so sorry for the double.

Look at the Clippers they suck, not just because of camby. I there is one thing that the front office has been good at lately is getting rid of players that have little left in the tank (Mutombo, Mcdyess, maybe Iverson who I love). Sure Camby has great numbers, but the Nuggets dont' rely on help defense anymore. And really, if you watched any Nuggets games while Camby was here, he was a terrible defender. He got pushed around by smaller forwards, he didn't know how to defend a guy bigger than him, the opposing defense didnt have to worry about his offensive skills (other than the seldom 18 footer). He is a great shot blocker, help defender, community guy and rebounder but the Nuggs are better off without him.

Carmelo is going to be out for a month, there is no reason why the Nuggnuts should be hitting the panic button. They should stand pat and ride it out.

Good answer and the better question is why is Denver even thinking about trading Nene? They need the guy for low post and he is a beast. He is just coming back around from injuries. If I was Denver I would not trade him also. I would trade Martin more then him. If I was Dallas then it would be a perfect trade because Nene is what they need or Al Jefferson.

What happened to my post again. It's messed up today. Once I post this then my original post might come up.

January 7, 2009  01:40 PM ET

There's no way Denver is trading Nene. No way. No need to panic about Melo's fracture, he'll be back on the court in 2.5 weeks right after the 5 game home stand. Later, they'll look to bring in a big, although Wilcox is the same size as Birdman. Nuggz need a beefier big, like Etan Thomas in DC, or Zaza Pachulia someone who's like 6'10 260+ lbs.

There's no way the Nuggz are trading Nene. No way. No need to panic either. Melo will be back on the court in 2.5 weeks. Down the line, they'll make a trade for a big, but Wilcox isn't big enough (he's the same size as Birdman) and Nuggz need some beef to hold down the middle like Nene and also to match up against the likes of Yao, Duncan, Bynum, Gasol, Okur etc. Nuggz need a real big, like Etan Thomas in DC, or Zaza Pachulia...a guy who is 6'10+ 260+ lbs.. none of that 225- 235 skinny guys like Camby and Anderson.
