Top prospect Tavares on trade block?

If there is to be a trade for John Tavares by Friday's noon deadline, interested OHL teams are going to have to up the ante. That's the word from Oshawa Generals head coach and general manager Chris DePiero after a meeting yesterday afternoon with the OHL phenom and his agent. Tavares returned to Oshawa yesterday after helping Team Canada win its fifth consecutive gold medal Monday night at the world junior championship in Ottawa. Tavares, who had eight goals and seven assists in six games, was named the tournament MVP. His world junior teammate, Maple Leafs draft pick Chris DiDomenico, learned yesterday he had been traded in the QMJHL from the Saint John Sea Dogs to the Drummondville Voltiguers.

Talk about the ultimate rental player. This guy will be in the NHL next year and no where near the OHL. Why would anyone trade for him as it would certainly mortgage their future.

Who give a damn where he goes?

LGP, you nailed it. The least Oshawa is going to get if he gets traded is probably going to be two players, a first rounder this year and maybe next year, and a second rounder. It's too risky for a contender but some teams might be desperate enough. However, he is going straight to the NHL after this year so it's really not smart at all.

Any OHL team interested in Tavares right now is measuring their future by the Memorial Cup this spring and no further, and there are only a couple teams really in the running. I think a powerhouse like London would deem this a reasonable risk in the end

He just got on the bus to Belleville...as a general. I didnt know ohl players could have no trade clauses.....

Sea Dog is also known as a Sailor or Mariner.

I reckon the people of Oshawa probably do, as with anyone else who follows the OHL (a league that is on or about par with the AHL, in terms of talent).

Oshawa is an economically depressed city, and losing Tavares would be devastating to attendance at Generals games.

I also think any team that bids for his services is well aware that he's a rental, given all the nattering nabobs in the media wondering if he will go #1 or #2 in the draft - at least, before his blazing show of talent in the World Juniors.
