Sundin: I'm ready

After an agonizing six-month soap opera, Mats Sundin is set to make his Vancouver Canucks debut Wednesday in Edmonton. The 37-year-old Swede declared himself fit for duty following his second full practice with the team Tuesday. He hedged his bets only in the case of a sudden overnight problem, but even he conceded that seemed remote. He felt good, he announced, and he felt ready. "Unless something feels tight or I feel the effects of these two workouts, there is a good chance I'll play," said Sundin, who finally signed with the Canucks on Dec. 18, nearly half a year after their original $20-million offer July 1. "I think I am ready and I am anxious to play, of course. I'm looking forward to getting back playing the game but, at the same time, I want to make sure I'm ready physically so I can stay in the lineup."

Maybe now T&R can give us daily updates on how Sundin feels after each game. Let the soap opera continue!

And we're ready to stop hearing about you......

WHO GIVES A RAT'S BUTT!

January 7, 2009  10:13 AM ET

He "declared himself fit for duty" and then talks about "the effects of these TWO workouts".....boing......was that a muscle pulling? Now we get to hear hourly updates on his boo-boo.

I hope he blows his knee out.

January 7, 2009  10:19 AM ET

They admitted it!!! They finally admitted it!!! Not only did they say "soap opera", but they even graciously included "agonizing." I think our message finally got through.

"I want to make sure I'm ready"

Yeah? I want you to go the hell away!

Then we would have to endure mor T&R about him!

I hope he stinks just so maybe the next time a has-been/never-was decides to take half a year off no one will care. I am tired of seeing a daily updates on Sudin and his stupid return to the NHL. Does anyone outside of Vancouver care? I think even people in Van-city are tired of hearing about the messiah/saviour coming to save the day. The only things he lead the Leafs to were high draft picks and early golf seasons.

High draft picks? When? Where? He always managed to push us into 9th place... and totally screw us out of picks.

Hell even with this crew of Leafs they can't even tank properly.

It's encouraging to hear so many other fans voice the same sentiment that I've felt for years now. For a long time, it was the daily Forsberg ankle update, then the Sundin watch, mixed in with the Niedermayer saga and other aging UFA's who "retire" for the first 4-5 months of the season and then sort through the "contenders" that they'd like to play for as the play-offs approach, a la Paul Coffey trying to join the team that up 3 games to 1 in the Cup finals.... Enough already! Either retire or join a team before the season begins, in fact before camp starts!

It's encouraging to hear so many fans express the same sentiment that I've felt for years. The Forsberg ankle saga and his ruminating on where he would play, the Sundin saga, the Niedermayer story mixed in with many other aging UFA's who "retire" unofficially for the first 4-5 months of the season and then wait to see who is going to contend for the Cup... a la Paul Coffey trying to join up with the team that's up 3 games to 1 in the Cup finals... Enough already! Either retire for real (and go away without ruining your legacy) or join a team before the season, in fact before camp, begins! Last time I checked, the season officially begins in the first week of October, not in January so unless you're seriously injured, you better be on the ice and getting ready to go with your team in September!

we're ready for ya Mats!

Now play and shut up!

I really liked Sundin... liked being the operative word. Now, I just can't stand the sight of the guy. Which is pretty sad... because he really is a decent hockey player and for the most part was a very likeable guy.

January 7, 2009  05:42 PM ET

I am as sick of the Sundin media-fest as all of you...but consider that it is a media driven frenzy to talk about nothing, not Sundin doing the talking! If he hadn't have been a Maple Laff for 13 years (or mediocrity) this would have been reported in WAYYYY less than it has. If you want to blame anyone, blame the TO media, TSN, Sportsnet, Kypreos, and all the other talking heads who insisted on talking about a guy who was hiding out a continent away saying nothing!

January 7, 2009  05:42 PM ET

*of* mediocrity

January 7, 2009  06:46 PM ET

Here's hoping Deadmonton kicks their petoot.

But they won't.

That's got to be an NSL plot. They're just softening us up.

Did not see much of you yesterday against the Oilers, dera "Mr. Ready" man. Or did you mean, you're ready to cash your ridiculous paycheck?

He was busy watching the third line put pucks in the net.
