Mavs let NBA know about no-calls

The Dallas Mavericks, like most teams, often think referees short-change their players and they want the league to know about it. Coach Rick Carlisle wound up watching last week's game against Minnesota from the locker room after vehemently arguing that Dirk Nowitzki was being hacked without the benefit of any calls. He later said that he doesn't believe referees award Nowitzki enough for the punishment he endures. Under the guidance of Ron Johnson, the NBA's new senior vice president for referee operations, the league has made it easier than ever for teams to voice complaints -- and receive explanations. A new process allows teams to send questionable calls to the league office on a game-by-game basis via a designated Web site. A league official reviews the play and provides the team with an interpretation. "We like it," Cuban said. "We have been pretty good at picking the plays we challenge. We seem to have a pretty high batting average. I'm not sure how the league uses this information going forward, though."

So we are awarding fouls now instead of calling them, what is this a popularity contest.....wait that is the all star game, my bad.

The new system is not bad this year. The refs are more consistent w/ their calls and seems to be less bias unlike in the past. No more preferential treatment. It should have always been this way. Just call the game fairly no matter who or what team it is.

Seems like an interesting system, but refs have always been accused of giving some players better treatment then others.

I can't see that changing.

January 8, 2009  09:38 AM ET

I can't see that changing at all. Some players get the calls, some don't. It's preferential treatment but it's also human nature. I think refs respect players who don't complain when they're called. When they do, they don't get the calls. Look at Kobe...one of my pet peeves is that he always complains about the calls, then you have games like the ones against New Orleans and Golden State where he was getting clobered under the basket and got NO calls.

yeah things are changing, like lebron getting 4 steps instead of 2

I dont see them changing a call after the game though but maybe it will bring about more training

The mavs are still bitching huh!

January 8, 2009  10:44 AM ET

Everyone knows, theirs superstar rules, then there's everyone else's rules. Dirk is angry because he isn't getting his usual superstar calls as much this season..

theirs - theres

There should be a league wide crackdown on all refs. The game should be called directly down the middle 50/50 and absolutely no make-up calls. With a slight change in the playoffs since everyone knows the intensity level is alot different during that time, and some calls are better off not made for the good of the game, but star status should not decide what calls are made.

January 8, 2009  12:44 PM ET

After the Donaghy scandal, you would think David Stern would demand his refs to be more on their toes. Star status should NEVER matter in officiating.

January 8, 2009  12:45 PM ET

This could at least bring attention to the problem. By mailing the play to the league office, there is an opportunity to expose referees that are constantly guilty of "blown" calls.

I wonder if they also address wrong calls that actually brought them advantage...

The refs are not more consistent. Are you kidding? The NBA refs are the worst refs in the world. You're lying to yourself if you're saying there is no more preferential treatment. You should change your name to Mr. Gullible. Ever since the Jordan era ended, refs have become too power-hungry. They should let the players play instead of blowing their whistle @ so many non-calls. That is the only reason why Kobe scored 81 points. Playing defense is a joke now b/c of all the rule changes. Put Jordan from his Chicago days into the NBA game today, and he'll score 81 points in the 1st half EASY.

Wah wah Dallas someone needs to change there diapers. Dallas just sucks plain and simple and its there own fault. Why would you make a trade for a dinosaur who can't score. Dirks a good player but he's a flopper and has always bin a whinner and not to mention soft. remember last year when david West was slappin him on the face and he didn't do nothing bout it? O yeah I think Detlef Schrempf's dead isn't he?
