Legend turns down Maple Leafs

A nine-time Stanley Cup winner has decided he doesn't want to work for the Maple Leafs. Which moves a five-time Cup champion into a position of negotiating strength. Scotty Bowman has turned down the overtures of a three-year contract worth at least $6 million because he determined he couldn't, or didn't want to, work for CEO Richard Peddie. Bowman's reluctance has opened the door wide for former Senators general manager John Muckler to wind up as the senior hockey decision-maker in the Leafs operation.

Hahahahahahahahahahaha. No Bowman for you! You come back one year.

June 27, 2007  09:40 AM ET

Scotty was onsatge with Red Wings at the draft. He's a HockeyTowner anymore.

Who would want to work for the Leafs in their current state? I don't blame Bowman one bit for not wanting to work for Richard Peddie, a guy with NO hockey insight and is simply a "yes" man for Leaf management, who have no interest in winning, just making money.

just another incident of the Leafs getting their bubble burst! I love it!

June 27, 2007  09:57 AM ET

40 years and counting since making it to the NHL finals.
Could be another 400 years at this rate.
Nobody wants to work for the Leafs!

June 27, 2007  11:05 AM ET

ahhhh poor leafs. I'd cry but I'm waaaay smarter than that.

June 27, 2007  03:03 PM ET

It's liberating not being a Leafs fan anymore, I'll tell ya that.

June 27, 2007  04:07 PM ET

Wow. No surprise! Bowman is the smartest man I know. Why work for a losing, underachieving team when you can work for an organization like Detroit that actually knows how to win!

June 28, 2007  01:58 AM ET

Personally, I don't believe that the Toronto Make Me Laughs actually spoke to Scotty. This is typical hype from Leafs Nation.

Bowman left Montreal at the end of the 1979 season (the Habs won Stanley's mug that year - 4 in a row) because he was not offered the GM spot. What makes you think that he would consider working for an organization that would not give him full authority? He has a cozy position in Detroit where his opinions are respected.

Laugh fans should open their eyes and see that the crap on the ice is a reflection of the crap management team.

My motto " Anybody but the Leafs!"

June 28, 2007  11:40 AM ET

Toronto is cursed.

Put that in your Canadian pipe and smoke it.

June 28, 2007  09:00 PM ET

I love that leaf fans STILL think anyone want to be in Toronto!! WHY would Scotty leave the sweet gig he has in Motown for anything to do with the Leafs?! Dream on losers... you have a dying hockey club that will SUCK until the Ontario Teachers Pension Fund has nothing to do with the team....which will be never cause you suckers keep making them money!! GO WINGS!!

June 28, 2007  11:35 PM ET

Scotty Bowman has always set himself up to succeed. It's easy to do that when you coach the likes of Lafleur, Lemieux, Yzerman and an entire wing of the Hall of fame. He knows he won't win a Cup in Toronto before the next century, and let's face it, the one time he held an official position above coach (in Buffalo), he was a complete failure. He knows his limits.

June 29, 2007  01:59 PM ET

Well, if it's true above that Muckler is coming to be Ferguson's "Advisor" we might have some smart coming over to help him with this job. Lord knows he's struggling by himself.

THe problem Toronto has is that virtually every talented (Canadian born) player wants to be there.

Hard to chose. OH, and they only had one good owner (Steve Stavros) who actually wanted to win. He didn't get to be around enough to make a difference.

Othe than that, the owners have sucked since Ballard took the reigns.
