Chelios admits biting foes

Do not put your fingers near Chris Chelios' eyes. An opponent tried it a couple of decades ago and there was a price to pay. "I bit Tomas Sandstrom when I was in Montreal," admitted Chelios. "We were in a fight and he tried to gouge my eyes. It was just a natural instinct to do that (bite). "Plus the fact it was him. He was probably one of the most hated guys playing back then." Chelios didn't get suspended, fined or even receive an extra penalty for biting Sandstrom's finger. Sandstrom was with the Rangers at the time. "Broke skin, blood, the whole works," Chelios recalled. "The referee hated him so much, he just told (Sandstrom) to get out of there and go to the box. He (Sandstrom) tried to show the ref (the bloody finger) and the referee just said, 'Get out of here.'" Chelios was amused to find out Jarkko Ruutu of the Senators received a two-game suspension for biting Andrew Peters of the Sabres earlier this week.

Chelios bites??? Nah...too easy.

January 9, 2009  07:34 AM ET

Was there not a biteing incient in the World Juniors last week?

"He was probably one of the most hated guys playing back then."

That's funny, cuz so was Chelios.

January 9, 2009  08:33 AM ET

If he did that now, his dentures would come out ...

As sorry as #4 statement is, he is still better than 50% of defenseman on the ice today. He is a major liability against fast competition as evidenced against Pittsburg in the finals last year. the man is still nasty though.

Is this a shock really coming from Chelios? He's had a great career and is a first ballot hall of famer, but lets be honest here...he's not really known for being the cleanest player out there. Certainly not early on in his career.

I thought he was a healthy scratch for most of the playoffs and for the finals? Im asking not trying to make a point.

Not at my house. Either of them. They kept games interesting.

Chelly was getting blown past in the Conference Finals against Dallas, causing problems that helped Dallas get back in the series. I don't remember him playing any thereafter.

He also mentioned that Aaron Ward got bit on the back when he was still with Detroit. I guess it happens more than we would think. Guess you expect it more back then as opposed to the "gentlemen's game" that Bettman has worked hard for. Or maybe it's such big news now because of all the sloppy seconds going around that the league doesn't want biting to spread health concerns.

Someone should have told Chelios that if a player does something you dont like you dont bite them. You wait til a teammate has that player tied up in an altercation and then you punch him in the groin from behind.

January 9, 2009  11:04 AM ET

bostongm, Chelios is injury prone? Really? Over his career he's played 82% of his games. Considering the guy is now 46 that's pretty impressive.

bostongm, Chelios is injury prone? He's played in 82% of his games. For a defenseman that is pretty impressive, especially since he is still playing at age 46.

Ah, you stole my thunder. I wanted to say for him to bite now, he would have to go get his teeth from the locker room. Still back then getting blood on you wasn't so scarry.

Undoubtedly, particularly if you're from Pittsburgh, where I'm guessing "bites" is a regular part of the vocabulary when talking about the local NHL team.

Being prickly was part of what made Chelios so great in his prime. The classic guy you hate to play against but would love to have on your team. Trading him was one of the worst moves in recent history for my Blackhawks. That said, there's no excuse for biting another player. Ever.

And when Montreal traded him your way for a washed up Denis Savard (who should have been a Hab in the first place!) it was one of their worst ever trades.

50%? C'mom buddy, now you're guilty of putting up a sorry statement

January 9, 2009  03:19 PM ET

So Cheli's best days are behind him, true enough, but there are nights, as a Wing fan, when I'm watching Lilja (such as the Winter Classic) stink up the defensive zone and I'm glad we still have Cheli as our #7 man. He still brings a lot of the intangible stuff to the table, and since his return from that pre-season injury, the Wings have been much better in their own zone. Interpret that as you will. And anyhow, as long as the fingers aren't ending up in the chili at the Chili Bar, I say bite away, Cheli, bite away.

It's nice to see a player whose bite is worse than his bark. I'd rather see Cheli and Ruttu biting then the non-stop barking of chickensh*t players like Matt Cooke and Sean Avery! Fight, bite, slap like Semin...but do more than beak off and run away when you're challenged!
