Broncos vets to have say in new coach?

Ultimately, it won't be Pat Bowlen who decides whether Josh McDaniels, at 32, is ready to become the Broncos' next head coach. It would be Champ Bailey and Casey Wiegmann. The decisions would come from the hearts, souls and minds of D.J. Williams, Jay Cutler and Ebenezer Ekuban. It's the Broncos players who would determine whether a kid like McDaniels would be worthy of their respect, and trust, to follow his lead. "If he were going to get the job, I would say without exception the players would be surprised when he walks through the door," said Kyle Brady, who was a starting tight end for the record-setting New England Patriots' 2007 offense that was coordinated by McDaniels. "Their first thought will be, 'Who is this kid?' Because everybody to some degree judges things by appearances. Even though we all do our best not to.

Agreed... Ask the REDSKINS!

January 9, 2009  08:57 AM ET

lol....smart to have your vet 'leaders' who were the culprits
in allowing the team to collapse to have a say in ANYTHING

January 9, 2009  09:01 AM ET

Bowlen needs to be the one who determines whether or not McDaniels can earn the respect of the team he will be leading. Any team whose owner is concerned with how the players will "Feel" about a coaching decision, isn't a team I will consider to be a serious contender in the new season.

What easy going, player friendly (a.k.a. crappy) coach is left out there. The Boys still have Phillips tied up for now.

January 9, 2009  09:14 AM ET

because they(the vets) know so much about what that team needs right??? WHO'S stupid idea was this??? they can't even lead themselves down the field..

January 9, 2009  09:52 AM ET

Coaching by committee? Is that what comes next?

January 9, 2009  10:13 AM ET

It's a respect things guys and it should be done. Who's out there? Why not go after Bill Cowher - Throw money @ him Pat and he'll come out of retirement.

Whoever the idiot is who posted this didn't read the article. The point of the article is that the veteran players would need to respect McDaniels despite his youthful age for things to work out. That is it. Which makes sense. Not that they will have input on who becomes the head coach. Way to go, fannation.

January 9, 2009  10:26 AM ET

Who is the moron who posted this item? How about reading the article? In no way does the article suggest that the Broncos' players will have a say in who becomes the coach. It just says that the veterans would have to respect a potentially young coach in order for it to work out. Idiots...

January 9, 2009  10:42 AM ET

For a team that has ONE play off win in the last ten years, the Broncos players, and their owner, may want to review a lot about what they do and how they do it....This may be news to Bronco fans, but they should be more concerned about if they can get a coach to respect them instead of worrying about respecting the next possible coach in the beginning.
There has been a whole lot of choking going on in the Mile High city for the last ten years.....

BINGO. /close thread.

Some folks need to go watch some re-runs of "Reading Rainbow".

Looks like some people need to get back on the "Reading Rainbow"...

Start at the top with a smart GM and then hire a good coach (they are not as hard to find as people think), and don't get caught up in personality/celebrity-first football. The Broncos need to improve their approach to personnel decisions more than anything else.

When did Jay Cutler become a vet. He has only been starting for 2 and a half years. Does that really qualify as a vet.

I must be a moron.....let me read this article again

January 9, 2009  11:43 AM ET

First of all, Kyle Brady isnt the type of player who should be commenting on anything. Hes a journeyman who would surprise me if he was still on the team next year. McDaniels is 32 but how can you not respect a guy who led the single greatest offensive season a team has had in history. Pat Bowlen needs to get a his head out of his ****. If your team is worth hundreds of millions, you don't let the grunts choose your coach.

I'd hire Romanowski. I'd love to see him punch Belichick in the face at mid-field after a game.
