Vikings back in market for No. 1 QB

t was clear Thursday after Brad Childress' postseason media gathering that the Vikings' coach has no No. 1 quarterback heading into next season. That makes it a good bet the team will pursue New England's Matt Cassel if the Patriots are reasonable about a trade. If not, the next best bet for a starting quarterback appears to be Seattle's Matt Hasselbeck. With the Vikings expected to save about $13 million by not re-signing free agents Matt Birk, Darren Sharper and Jim Kleinsasser, and saving at least an additional $5 million in guaranteed money that it would have taken to extend quarterback Tarvaris Jackson's contract, the team should have the resources to justify spending on a clear No. 1 quarterback. Jackson, whom the Vikings still figure has considerable upside, is expected to return to backup status.

So! Who couldn't see this coming?

January 9, 2009  08:50 AM ET

Good idea.

Hasselbeck is a solid QB, but at 33 he would be yet another band-aid for a wound that needs stitches; especially since he will be coming of an injury. Castle on the other hand, is only 26 and has proven that in the right system, he can be a real leader that can manage a game and sustain drives.
The Vikings would have spent a 1st round draft pick on a QB who will demand an insane amount of money regardless, so that is a sunk cost. And just like every year, you can find talent late into the draft. Childress and the Vikings should just do what it takes to land Castle and be done with it. They have something special with their Peterson/Taylor running back combo and stout defense. It's time they give themselves a QB who will help round out their core talent pool.

Tim Teebow!!

sec.. Sec!... SEC!! SEC!!!

With the right tweaking for next season the Vikings could be bona-fide SB contenders. Of course you could say that about some other teams too.

Dumb Vikes-
if they only made an offer to Chad before the year started

As I called it earlier this week on several TDs and T&R threads.

They should definitely go for Castle. He is only 26 and proven that in the right system, he will only get better. The Vikings have an amazing run game, which is the exact type of safe environment you want for a new and promising QB with real talent. Who cares if the Pats will want a 1st and 2nd round pick. The Vikes have a great Defense, a great Running game, a solid Offensive line, and some quality receivers. Now they just need a QB and they can be dangerous. The draft is deep in talent just like it has been every year. They would have spent a 1st round pick on a QB this year regardless. A QB that would have demanded an insane amount of money with out taking a snap in the NFL. Time to make the move Vikes.

The Vikes can have Brad Johnson back. Please take him

January 9, 2009  09:07 AM ET

I think the site is messed up again today.

January 9, 2009  09:12 AM ET

why would you get rid of Birk, Sharper, and flyingsaucer??? they have been with the team for ever and should stay... Ziggy needs to spend some money and get a QB and a couple of GOOD WR's.

makes zero sense...im going to salvage my team for a qb that has done a good job for 1 yr with dang near the best weapons in the league? are u a former LIONS gm in disguise? whom what other QBs have had a yr of success and then fell flat on their face? most recently the name derek anderson comes to mind, we see how that worked out. any team that trades for cassell is a team destined for futility, without all those weapons cassell is just another backup QB

You can't build status by quoting off of my quotes... Get a life.

January 9, 2009  09:24 AM ET

and trading for hasselbeck is a mistake. he's been constantly injured and is already 33. wait and check free agency and see who's available. if they wanted a qb there was a pleathera of options last year. u know the old saying...he who hesitates........m@sterbates!
