Leader of Green Bay's coordinator pack

It is nearing decision time for Green Bay Packers coach Mike McCarthy. The direction his team will take in the coming years could depend on whom he chooses to be his next defensive coordinator, a choice that probably isn't as clear as he had hoped. On Friday, McCarthy spent the day with longtime defensive coordinator Gregg Williams, according to a spokesman at agent Marvin Demoff's office. Williams, lately of the Jacksonville Jaguars but now a free agent in search of a new start, interviewed Thursday in New Orleans before meeting with McCarthy at the Packers' offices. The interview came a day after McCarthy met with former San Francisco 49ers head coach and past coaching associate Mike Nolan. Sources said McCarthy wanted to interview the top available coordinators. Now that he has done so, he has the option of offering one of the two a job or waiting to see if an assistant from a playoff team becomes available after this weekend. The assistant most coveted is Philadelphia secondary coach Sean McDermott, whose team plays Sunday against the New York Giants. He will not become available for interview until the Eagles are out of the playoffs.

You have to believe that a number of teams are waiting for Sean McDermott to become available. They see how well Spagnuola worked out after learning under Johnson in Philly.

I like the Gregg Williams idea.

HIRE BRETT FAVRE - maybe he is better at defense than he was at offense this year. He definitely is an expert when it comes to cornerbacks and safties !!!

Wait another week or two to see who else becomes available. I don't think anyone is going to snatch up Gregg Williams or Mike Nolan. If McCarthy makes a mistake in hiring the Defensive Coordinator, it will also affect who he hires as assistants as the Coordinator will want many coaches he's worked with in the past.

Ironically, the one coach I would have liked from Nolan's staff with the 49'ers was Mike Singletary. I know, I know, it's heresy for a Packers fan to say that. But Singletary was the one guy on that staff who really demonstrated leadership skills and had a strong effect on young players. Patrick Willis has turned into a real beast and I think A.J. Hawk would fulfill his true potential with the right coaching in the right system.

Of course, where the Pack REALLY needs help is on the defensive line. Other than Kampmann, they have NO pass rush. The next area after that to be addressed is the secondary where Harris and Woodson are showing their age and becoming brittle.

McCarthy needs to make the right decision here as the Packers defense cost them several games this year, especially down the stretch where they blew several leads in the second half.

PWings has some real good comments. Don't forget the injuries the defense had this year, they did play a part. But, the age issue needs to be addressed as well, they are old at critical spots even though they have one of the youngest teams in the NFL. What they need is someone with a good record and solid background who will determine what kind of defensive philosophy this team can handle and be successful.

Nice, I was thinking the same thing.

I think the biggest thing for MM is, the guy he does hire, may make or break his coaching status in Green Bay.
