07:48 AM ET 01.10 | You've heard of football prospects de-committing from colleges? Well, what about colleges de-committing from prospects? That may have been the case with Tucker's Jonathan Davis. He committed to South Carolina, but South Carolina has withdrawn its scholarship offer, according to GoGamecocks. If true, it is the most disheartening thing that can happen in recruiting. "I really don't know why, they just called and broke it off," Davis told the website. "They called my coach today. I haven't talked to any USC coaches." The 5-foot-7, 205-pound Davis told the website he has no other options at the current time. Georgia Tech desperately wanted Davis and offered a scholarship earlier this fall, but moved on after Davis said he needed more time to check out his options.

I have heard of this happening if the player was involved in something bad or criminal, but that currently does not seem to be the case. If they are withdrawing just because they want to use it on another player, I think this would hurt their recruiting long term, as why commit to them if they can simply change their mind later.

This smells fishy... If the kid is clean... There is no reason to pull his offer... Unless they told him he had a deadline to accept... Interesting

How do you guys not know that colleges over-offer? And what happened was they needed that scholarship for somebody they want more. It is a disgusting practice.

The story I found was that a change in position coach changed his prospect... I suspect the new coach thought he was a bit smaller than he wanted...
Still, strange to see a 4 star position 9 ranked MLB have their scholarship offer yanked, so some program will swoop in and pick him up fast... I just hope it is an SEC east team :)

If there was any criminal or character issues, I wonder if he has any legal issues. How binding is this scholarship?

Offers aren't binding at all. Nothing matters until signing day. If you want a worse story look at UNC. They have more commits than roster space right now and are still chancing kids. That means some kids will end up with no place to possible scholarships for them to play football next year. Class act by Butch Davis.

Now South Carolina's coaching staff can't go back to this High School. I hear this morning the High School Coach says nobody from USC can ever come back to the school. jerry
