Vikings zeroing in on Cassel

It's looking more likely than ever that the quarterback the Vikings will target is the Patriots' Matt Cassel, who could cost $30 million in guaranteed money as well as first- and second-round draft picks. The Vikings' first-round pick is expected to be between Nos. 21 and 23 overall this spring. Cassel, 26, has played four seasons in the NFL, has learned from no-nonsense coaches Bill Belichick in New England and Pete Carroll at Southern California, and is of strong character, as Carroll will tell them when the Vikings do their background checks.

dumb to give up the house for a 1 year wonder in a system that works. take cassel out of NE and you could have an overpriced backup. 30 million and 2 picks is a big price tag to learn if cassel is a starter.

dumb to give up the house for a backup qb in a system that works. 30 million and 2 draft picks to find out if cassel is a 1 year wonder, a qb in a system that works, or an actual NFL starting qb is a gamble.

Why would the Vi-queens want to pay that much when it would cost less just to draft some guys and develope them?

January 11, 2009  09:31 AM ET

" We still think T. Jackson has an upside" .....LOL

January 11, 2009  09:40 AM ET

the vikes will be horrible for years to come if they pull the trigger on this deal..... the patriots are salivating hoping this is true. they'll take the bum yr next year to get all those picks so belicheat can stockpile his cupboard again and have another run like they had earlier decade. cassell hasnt proven anything, he has a pleathera of weapons that the vikes clearly dont have. he and the vikes will fall flat on their faces, that much i can assure you. there have been plenty players that have had a "breakout" year, get paid, and then shoot the boot, it happens every year and yet teams continue to break the bank for these players. oh well, im no vikes fan but i do cut for AD and that defense, if their happy with im exstatic

t-jack may not be ready to be a "starting" nfl qb, but he did go 9tds vs. 2ints say what u want but u cant "make" up stats

January 11, 2009  10:44 AM ET

He showed last year what he's capable off, and he's gonna get paid for it. I'm happy for players that spend years waiting for an opportunity, then grab it and never let go.

January 11, 2009  11:11 AM ET

Stupid move if the Vikings go through with it.

January 11, 2009  11:26 AM ET

After the 2007 season the Vikings wanted the Browns Derek Anderson and he turned out to be a one year wonder. Now they want Cassel. Granted he is coming from a much stronger system, but he too could be a one year wonder, especially if he changes into a different system that may not fit his playing style. In the NFL, you never know, but why not try the draft first because it will be a lot cheaper than giving up a lot of money, plus draft picks? Good thing there is plenty of time to make a decision on this matter, because they better make the right one...

January 11, 2009  11:31 AM ET

he is better than what they have now.
still, not worth the cost.

For your info, as a Pats fanatic, you just have to consider a few things beyond the fact that Cassell only started for one year. First, he improved every game and never made the same mistake twice. By the end of the year, he was a first rate quarterback in every facet of the position. Second, he has a strong and accurate arm, and even better intelligence and preparation, but his greatest strength is his off the charts intangibles, especially clutch playmaking and competitiveness. He is similar to Brady in the sense that their strength and differentiation from the herd rest upon the same set of attributes, though they are not really similar players in the way they implement their strengths to get the job done. Believe me, if Minnesota doesn't give the Pats a 1st & 2nd, someone else will, and even if Minny wants to do it, someone with higher draft picks will beat them out. Unless Brady is truly on track to be 100% by the start of next season, I'd keep Cassell instead of making that kind of trade. He is worth a lot - if Mangina had the coaching intelligence and guts to start Ratliff instead of Favre against Miami in the last game, I really believe the Cassell-led Pats had as good a chance as any team to win the AFC and Super Bowl this year.

For your information, Pats fan here, you just have to consider a few things beyond the fact that Cassell only started and excelled for one year - which, incidently, is the most he could possibly have done, and he did it. First, he improved noticably every game and never made the same mistake twice. By the end of the year, he was a first rate quarterback in every facet of the position. Second, while he has a strong and accurate arm, and even better intelligence and preparation, his greatest strength is his off the charts intangibles, especially clutch playmaking and bristling competitiveness. He is similar to Brady in the sense that their strengths and differentiation from the herd rest upon the same set of attributes, though they are not really similar players in the way they implement their strengths to get the job done.

He is a difference-maker and worth a lot - if Mangina had the coaching acumen and guts to start Ratliff instead of Favre against Miami in the last game, I really believe the Cassell-led Pats had as good a chance as any team to win the AFC and Super Bowl this year.

Get Real!!!!!!!!!!!!!! TJack is the QB! Why would you give up some much?

January 11, 2009  12:13 PM ET

Get REAL!!!!!!!!! Vikings have a QB TJack! It makes no sense to give away the house, the car, the kids, the wife for Cassell!

I agree giving up a first, second and a big contract is too much for Cassel. I think he is a great guy and a good Qb, but let's face it New England is playing the bluff card they don't want 12 million for brady and 14 million for cassel.
Plus with this draft the 23 pick is still a great pick compared to previous years, and the second round has some wr's that will make an impact right away.

As a Viking fan - we've decided to wait until ALL of the QB's decide where they're going to go and then pickup Jeff George. We're moving on ... sigh!

same can be said for derek anderson 2 yrs ago. never made the same mistake twice, improved every game yada yada yada

we've all seen this movie before and unless we're all dilusional we know how it will end

Sorry, I don't think you can compare Cassel to Derek Anderson. Cassel has had consistently excellent coaching from college on: Pete Carrol, Bill Belichick, Josh McDaniels and Tom Brady. He's smarter than Anderson too. This year Cassel routinely made better decisions than Anderson did even last year.

With Jared Allen, the Williamses, Adrian Peterson et al, the Vikes are built to win now. Give Cassel another receiver and they'll rule the division. Plus, the Vikes wouldn't want the Bears to get him would they?

I can't believe there are Viking fans who still believe in "TJack"! Would you guys wake up? He is not taking anyone to the Super Bowl! The Vikings have a small window to actually win a title in my life time and I don't want to see it wasted with freaking T Jack. Do what you have to Vikings, take a change and get a real QB in here. Or do nothing, continue losing in the first round and keep your perfect winless Super Bowl record intact.
