Pioli-Chiefs talks heating up

Discussions between the Kansas City Chiefs and Patriots vice president of player personnel Scott Pioli have intensified, according to an NFL source. Although negotiations had not begun as of early last night, word out of Kansas City was that the possibility of a marriage was picking up momentum, according to the Boston Globe. Even before he interviewed last Monday, Pioli was presumed to be the Chiefs' top choice to run their football operation. That hasn't changed since Kansas City chairman Clark Hunt conducted a thorough, close-to-the-vest search that has included multiple candidates. Hunt, interim president Denny Thum, and Pioli have increased their dialogue and think they could form a strong partnership, which is crucial, because regardless of whom the Chiefs hire, that person will have to work closely with Thum.

This is looking like its gonna happen.

They should have changed GM's last year, when they had all those draft picks.

There is absolutely no good reason why Pioli, if given the authority to choose his own coach and have the final say on personnel matters, shouldn't take this job. Still, as a Pats fan, I REALLY hope that he doesn't, because the guy is a brilliant drafter, and I'd selfishly like to keep him in New England :-)

I think this thing could be finalized as early as Wednesday. My only question is who will Pioli look to hire as his next head coach. Word out of Denver is that Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels is close to a deal. Would McDaniels accept a deal before interviewing with Pioli and the Chiefs, assuming Herm Edwards gets the ax in the next couple of weeks? Would Mike Shanahan be the front runner, despite being despised by this fanbase for the past 15 years. Would Ferentz stay at Iowa to be with his son? Would another candidate emerge for the Chiefs to look into? All I know is that I want Will Shields as the offensive line coach. Any ideas for the Chiefs' head job?

Anyone that is good with the draft is great, but like someone else said it would have been nice to have had him for last years draft. Especially with all the draft picks they had.

He's not going. Plain and simple. He's taking a page out of his father in laws book and seeing what they'll give him.

January 11, 2009  02:36 PM ET

I think the Chiefs would be a better fit for Ferentz than Cleveland would have been. Hard to imagine any coach doing worse than Edwards has done!

January 11, 2009  02:37 PM ET

I think Ferentz would be a better fit here than in Cleveland. Hard to imagine any coach doing worse than Edwards, so it would be a much easier place for a College Coach to operate. Plus there would be more Iowa fans to help support him in KC.

If he has full authority to do his job, it's a good choice by the Chiefs.

As another poster said on the issue on another thread, you have to believe that he won't leave for money. The Krafts have got to have an understanding with him that they will match whatever offer he gets from another team, so he may be pursuing this to get a firm offer he can take back to Bob and Jon.
However, the opportunity to run his own show entirely, with a deep pockets owner who stays out of operations has got to be tempting. What has he got to lose?

God knows the Chiefs needs something to go right for them.

January 11, 2009  03:45 PM ET

Does this really suprise anyone. it's a perfect fit for Pioli. Carl Peterson was GM for 20 years it is as stable organization you'll find in the NFL. Great fan base, some good looking young players. Pioli is ready to do his own thing and how many jobs are better.

why would he want to leave the Pats????

More money!?

Think of it this way... If Pioli leaves, Josh McDaniels takes a Head coaching job, Tom Brady has difficulties rehabbing, Seau finally retires & Cassel leaves to the Vikings... the Patriots may be the ones rebuilding.

Either way I wish him luck. He was a loyal member of the Pats but if he moves on good luck to him.

Another reason for Pioli to take this job is that his wife is originally from Kansas. The Chiefs also impress me as being a classy organization, too. Still, he came up the football ranks alongside Belichick. If the money is the same, I can't see why he would leave.
