Could Favre replace Delhomme?

On the day that the Panthers were supposed to begin the process of exorcising the demons of two years of underachievement, we might have seen the last of quarterback Jake Delhomme in black and Carolina blue. Five interceptions and a fumble for a 34-year-old quarterback entering the final year of his contract could be enough to prompt the Panthers to move in a different direction. Especially with a decent number of quarterbacks available via trade or free agency, and with Delhomme due to earn $5.325 million in 2009. One thing's certain -- there will be plenty of voices in Charlotte calling for the team to bid farewell to Jake. Ever since Delhomme exploded onto the scene in 2003, there has been periodic whispers and concerns that he's simply not good enough to be a high-end NFL quarterback. If there was any doubt, last night's performance removed it. And here's something to keep in mind: At one point in the 2008 offseason, agent Bus Cook was privately saying that Brett Favre wanted to play for the Panthers. That said, some might argue that Favre already was playing for the Panthers last night.

Why would Favre play for the Panthers? I am sick of hearing of Brett Favre even when he isn't in the league! Is he or isn't he (going to retire)? I don't care if Brett is as great as everyone is making him out to be, I WOULD NOT WANT HIM ON MY TEAM! Favre is overrated and under no circumstances would I want him on the Steelers.

Man, some headlines are just MADE for Google, huh? As if Brett Favre was the big news in yesterday's loss.

And I'll say it AGAIN...when FN ends a headline with a question mark, the answer is always "no". It's just an attention grab.

January 11, 2009  08:56 AM ET

I must say that I was really surprised at Delhomme and the Panthers last night. I really thought they were going to roll over the Cardinals. Have to feel good for the Cardinals and their fans.

January 11, 2009  08:56 AM ET

wow,I just can't believe that Cards beat the Panthers....how in the hell the Panthers quite on their running game when that was one of the aspects of the game that had great success for them in the regular season? Hard to explain but now a lot of people will agree that Jake is the reason why they are not a better team, sorry but the guy is not that great and I think the Panthers should pursue a quality QB this off season...bye bye Jake....oh,and please don't get Favre...let the guy retire....

January 11, 2009  09:00 AM ET

favre will be rumored to play for any team this off season that could use a QB. he'll even be rumored to be the Jets starter in 09..

January 11, 2009  09:03 AM ET

Favre isn't the answer in Carolina. If I had to choose between Delhomme and Favre, I'm going with Delhomme. For some unknown reason, the Panthers decided to go with a pass first game plan after the first two turnovers.

January 11, 2009  09:30 AM ET

Sweet. I hope Favre does end up playing for the Panthers. Can't to watch Asante running back all those pick sixes that "Mr. Overrated" throws up for him.

Favre blows ... but can't help to wonder when the media will figure that out. 20 TD passes, 19 INT's and he goes to the Pro Bowl ... what a fraud ...

January 11, 2009  09:30 AM ET

And why would you replace a $5 million mistake with a $13 million mistake? It isn't to get younger.

January 11, 2009  09:31 AM ET

Brett Favre 2008 - 20 TD's, 19 INT's and he goes to the Pro Bowl ... biggest crook in NFL history.

I hope he does go to the Panthers so his overrated **** can keep throwing INT's that Asante Samuel can take to the house!

January 11, 2009  09:32 AM ET

everyone get off of delhommes back! he played a heck of a game last night and it certainly his fault they got beat, i mean a guy goes out and performs at a very high level and just because he's the quarterback he gets the blame when the lose? it really grinds my gears when a player is skewered for a loss when he had nothing to do w/ the outcome of the game, GET A GRIP people! Delhomme is a hall of fame quarterback and his future is nothing but bright!!!!!

that is all

January 11, 2009  09:33 AM ET

*certainly wasnt his fault

January 11, 2009  10:02 AM ET

Farve could throw as many interceptions as Delhomme sure. Farve needs to walk away! Its long long overdue

January 11, 2009  10:12 AM ET

Jake Delhomme=Average

That being said, I don't Favre anywhere near Carolina.

January 11, 2009  10:12 AM ET

Farve reminds me a bit of that famous "bring out your dead" bit from Monty Python's movie Life of Brian. This is where I picture Farve moaning 'I'm not dead yet" as the league tries to toss him on to the wagon.

I always used to like Farve. Not sure why he puts so much effort into ruining his own good name!

January 11, 2009  10:22 AM ET

What's it going to take to stop these 'bird' teams.....West Nile Virus? The Ravens, The Cardinals, and possibly The Eagles. All I can say is GO STEELERS!

January 11, 2009  10:23 AM ET

I guess Carolina was so impressed with Del-hommie's 5 int game they want to bring in someone who can guarantee those kinds of int numbers every game?

January 11, 2009  10:23 AM ET

Why would Carolina want Brett Favre? He has been known to play just like Delhomme did last night (not always but definitely toward the end of the season) and he's older. That doesn't make sense whatsoever.

January 11, 2009  10:26 AM ET

If Delhomme threw too many picks. The all-time interception leader is not the answer.

Favre needs to retire, sometimes it's hard to walk away from what you love (just look at Michael Jordan) but it has to be done. Retire on a high rather then retiring due to injury or simple old age.
