Oilers covet Senator Fisher

The Edmonton Oilers are eyeing the Ottawa Senators for help at center, but their No. 1 choice might not be Jason Spezza. While league sources say the Oilers have a mild interest in Ottawa's top center, the man Edmonton general manager Steve Tambellini really wants is Mike Fisher. Fisher has been struggling this season with only three goals in 35 games going into last night, after scoring 23 last season. But the 28-year-old isn't one of the players the Senators are looking to move -- despite his struggles and contract, an average of $4.2 million US for the next five seasons. The Oilers wouldn't rule out bringing in Spezza, but his seven-year, $49-million contract is tough to take on. Plus, Edmonton would prefer to add a hard-nosed player such as Fisher, who has a no-movement clause in his contract until the end of the 2009-10 season.

I can't see Fisher going. He's struggling but still getting the chances to pull out of it. I can really see Spezza going somewhere. He just doesn't seem to be wanted in Ottawa. Edmonton can't really afford him though.

I don't know, Ottawa has to do something to get this team going in the right direction.

Oil have nothing to deal...unless they are giving up on Schremp and want to mortgage the future by losing Gagner or Cogliano. Not likely. And don't talk about their goalies as being worth anything! Roloson is washed up.

Are you kidding me? Edmonton is loaded! Gone are the days of nickles and dimes with Kats as their new owner. And ... they're motivated buyers right now. I just hope they don't pull off another Penner boondoggle!

Get rid of Brian Murray! Get a GM who knows what he's doing and get a better coach. Hartsburg is a good guy but, that doesn't make him a good coach.

January 11, 2009  01:28 PM ET

Fisher will stay. If someone leaves Ottawa, it will come from the big 3 and I don't see the captain going anywhere.

January 11, 2009  03:34 PM ET

Bring in Spezza? Edmonton needs some grit, I would love to have his scoring touch but a Mike Fisher would be nice fit. Also, Edmonton now has a rich owner who has said he will spend to the cap. Look at Hossa last year. Changes are on the way with Roloson going money under the cap will be theres to spend. No more Edmonton can't afford this money.

Take Fisher if you want him, Edmonton. He's one of the most overpaid guys in the league.

Absolutely true!

Edmonton can't afford Spezza, nor can any other team. Ottawa will never give up Alfredsson, he's a Senator for life. I guarantee that. Spezza and Heatley are too pricey to move, so they won't be going anywhere either. Guys that can move from Ottawa:

1 - Mike Fisher
2 - Chris Neil
3 - Antoine Vermette
4 - Christoph Schubert
5 - Brendan Bell
6 - Alexandre Picard
7 - Martin Gerber
8 - Alex Auld
9 - Shean Donovan
10 - Dean McAmmond
11 - Jesse Winchester
12 - Chris Phillips
13 - Filip Kuba

The list can go on... I don't agree with moving some of those guys, but I guarantee, they are all up on the block.

EXACTLY! Also, Ottawa will never get rid of Alfredsson. The other 2 guys on the big 3 have contracts that are just too big to move. Ottawa is stuck.

Heatley may be pricey, but I think a number of teams would be interested in him. He would look damn good with Crosby or Malkin.
