Mavs-Bobcats deal would include Mohammed

The Charlotte Bobcats are in ongoing trade discussions with the Dallas Mavericks, and possibly the Oklahoma City Thunder, that could move Raymond Felton and Nazr Mohammed, two NBA sources confirmed to the Observer. Some elements of a potential deal were first reported Sunday in the Boston Globe. The Observer has learned that any deal likely would include moving backup center Mohammed, who is owed about $13.3 million over the next two seasons. If a deal is consummated, the Bobcats likely would end up with Dallas Mavericks center DeSagana Diop. They pursued Diop during free agency last summer before he re-signed with Dallas. The deal Diop signed with the Mavericks is large -- four more seasons at an average salary of nearly $6.7 million.

WOW stop the presses this is gonna be a big one a big DeSagana Diop t3rd of a trade, the bobcats just got pantsd by the suns in that trade i guess they havent had enough yet

Mavs trade rumors day. If Diop would have been playing better then he would not be in this mess. After getting the money then he decides to get lazy.

January 12, 2009  08:42 AM ET

Nazr look good when Isiah got him for the Knicks, then he wilted under the expectations. Could not do it in Detroit, could not do it in San Antonio beside Duncan. These guys just seem to travel from team to team. It seems he should be more than a pratice player.

January 12, 2009  08:45 AM ET

Is Diop really worth giving up two players?

January 12, 2009  08:58 AM ET

it's nice that charlotte is trying to do something.....but what is the point of going for playerst that are either irrelevant or suck?

January 12, 2009  09:17 AM ET

What! Who in their right mind, would pay Diop $6.7 million? It's now official; Jordan is nuts. This is a good move for the Mavs however. Kidd is probably moving on, and Felton could be a nice addition. Mavs should make the deal before his Airness comes to his senses. Now if they could make a deal for Brad Miller, and get rid of Dampier, they might have a basketball team. Before everybody begins thinking that perhaps I've lost my senses too, I know nobody wants Dampier. It was just a thought.

Wow, what a blockbuster! OK, now that I have stopped laughing, what in the heck is Charlotte doing? I understand moving Raymond Felton but this deal doesnt come close to helping Charlotte.

Well, this deal doesn't help Dallas either but at least in Felton they get back a young point guard that will make Jason Kidd expendable.

"at least in Felton they get back a young point guard that will make Jason Kidd expendable. "

he's gone regardless....
they already have Terry- who is a solid guard.
Not sure if felton will turn into anything & they will have to pay him at some point.
Of course if they can rid themselves of diops contract- it is a good move- even if they do let felton go instead of signing him

Couldn't agree more.

This will open up more salary cap space for the big 2010 fire sale on top players. At one point I had hopes for Diop but he just hasn't improved.

DAL should explore doing these 3 trade scenarios, that may well happen and greatly improve their team:

1. Terry & Wright & one 1st r pick for Boozer (UTAH)
2. Dampier & Stackhouse & Barea & two 2nd r picks for Huges & Gordon & Cimmons (CHI)
3. Diop & Bass & Singleton & Green for Felton & Brown & Mohammed (CHA).

UTAH: gets the good SG it is lacking and the chance to play Millsap and see him become an allstar. Plus the pick and the opportunity to get rid of a player that doesnt want to be there.

CHI: gets a rebounder C, a productive veteran, a young PG, the valuable picks and cap flexibility by the less value of Dampiers contract (instead of Huges, who doesnt want to be there); plus the leadership this veterans bring.

CHA: gets a good backup C and gets rid of Felton & Mohammed, whom they have been shopping since day 1 and wouldnt be resigned. Plus a versitile combo F and some short term contracts that give them cap space for next year.

DAL: gets a player who can play the post as a C/PF, 3 good scoring players for its backcourt and some backup bigs. Plus cap space if they choose to let Boozer or Kidd or Gordon or all go next year, and Huges the year after.

Resulting Rosters:
CHA / CHI / UTAH / DAL
Augustine / Rose / Williams / Kidd
Bell / Hinrich / Terry / Gordon
Wallace / Deng / Miles / Howard
Diaw / Gooden / Millsap / Nowitsky
Okafor / Dampier / Okur / Gooden

Diop / Barea / Kirilenko / Felton
Bass / Stackhouse / Price / Huges
Singletary / Nocioni / Brewer / George
Morrison / Noah / Koufus / Mohammed
May / Thomas / Wright / Brown
Green / Gray / Harpring / Williams
Ajinca / Sefalosha / Knight / Cimmons

Improved?? He's gotten worse. Who does this dude know that would allow him to stay in the league 8 years? How can a 7 footer average less than 2 points a game? And who in the world gave him a $7 million contract?

January 12, 2009  11:00 AM ET

A move like this shows how desperate the Bobcats are for a big and just how much more work they need to be competitive.

Right and the Mavs will FINALLY make it to the Championship. GL with that on your resume....

Why is this deal such a topic of interest. The only relevant player in this deal is Raymond Felton. I think Felton would fit nicely in Dallas especially when Kidd leaves after this season. Diop is irrelevant and I cant understand why a team gives him such money and a commitment for 4 years.

January 12, 2009  11:29 AM ET

I actually like that deal, if OKC is involved. Then it could look like this:
Charlotte gets Earl Watson and the Denver lottery protected 2009 pick from Oklahoma and Diop from Dallas.
Dallas gets Mohammed, Felton and 2009 second round pick from Charlotte.
Oklahoma gets Devean George, Antoine Wright and 2009 (lottery protected) pick from Dallas.
I think it works salary-wise.
Charlotte would benefit from another first round pick, would swap one overpaid backup center for another and get a decent backup pg for augustine.
Dallas would benefit from a solid young pg to back up kidd or take over if kidd leaves and gets a backup center for dampier with a shorter contract than diop.
Oklahoma gets an expiring contract with George and cuts down some of the salary that watson would earn, and swaps one first round pick for another.

So the Mavs will finally get a real big man down low. Thats solves one problem now lets fix the PG sitcheation

January 12, 2009  11:40 AM ET

Note to Fannation T&R personel

1 fix post problem
2 give better topics
3 add spell check
4 un-censor all subjective language.

That is all for now.

January 12, 2009  11:48 AM ET

The Mavs want to save money for 2010.. Mohammad's contract is too big for them to want to take on.

January 12, 2009  12:03 PM ET

in what way is this trade desirable for the bobcats?
