Magic looking for right deal

The Magic have been a constant in NBA rumors circles, namely because the team is very thin at the point guard position. The Magic have been rumored to have entertained trades involving forward Brian Cook and fan favorite J.J. Redick, both player played extended minutes last night and shot the ball very well from outside. "I don't know the rumor mill, I really don't subscribe to it," joked Otis Smith about the rumors of his team looking for deals with Redick and Cook. "We have a pretty good locker room, with a pretty good group of guys. When they are all healthy, we're a hard team to play. There are not a lot of teams that want to line up... tonight we shot the ball well, J.J. and Brian came in and did what they do, they shot it well and got a lot of open looks." The constant roadblock to a deal according to sources near the Magic is the commitment to the team's unique chemistry. The NBA trade deadline is less than 40 days away, and talks around the league are heating up and Otis admitted he and the Magic were looking and would continue to look for the right deal.

Too much rumors. I guess that's why they call this place less Truth and more Rumors.

Too many threes!

The title of this rumour is awesome. Theoretically, isn't every team in every league looking for the right deal? Sheesh.

If orlando could somehow land a solid ( or at least an updrade) 2 guard- they would be a significant player in the playoffs....just not sure who would be available or if they had enough to give up

The Orlando Magic cannot and will not beat the top teams in a 7 game series!

January 12, 2009  09:22 AM ET

While Michael is feeling so magnanimous, maybe the Magic should make a play for Felton.

January 12, 2009  09:25 AM ET

Orlando does need a SG in the worst way, and they could also use a backup point guard but with Redick and Cook as bait, I'm not sure they can get any quality back. It just doesn't look good for them in the trade market. Any deal they make would be role player for role player.

"The Orlando Magic cannot and will not beat the top teams in a 7 game series!"

That's why they NEED a better 2 guard.....

That being said- they have a STRONG frontcourt & solid PG >> they absolutely can beat Boston & Cleveland the way they stand now- but it would be tough.

January 12, 2009  11:26 AM ET

I am a SPurs fan and if the Magic play like they did last night on a consistent basis they can beat anyone. They've handled the Spurs both games this year. Beat the Lakers already and crushed the Hornets, one of the strongest teams from the West. I like the Magic. A young team that's only going to get better.

Next up in the Pargo race!!!

January 12, 2009  11:46 AM ET

Sign Latrell Sprewell, LOL. If Redick and Cook can knock down the three on a constant basis, the Magic will be very hard to beat cause it means teams cant double team Howard, Lewis or Hedo.

January 12, 2009  11:48 AM ET

J.J. Redick is the Vanilla Ice of the NBA.

Im pretty sure van gundy is in no mood to be choked this season

JJ hasnt even shot the ball well in Orlando and that was all he did at Duke. But i believe in the right system that he could become a decent off the bench producer. But he hasnt been put there yet. I am not saying an All Star or even a starter but believe he can do Something. He is worth the risk. I mean you can trade a bench scrub for him and maybe take that chance to rejuvenate him.

January 12, 2009  12:19 PM ET

they're balling right now, but some depth at both guard positions wouldn't hurt

January 12, 2009  12:46 PM ET

Isn't EVERY TEAM looking for the right deal? So in theory, this thread needs to be posted for every team in the league.

January 12, 2009  01:11 PM ET

3 feet.... that's the distance JJ needs to overcome. It's a big difference than NCAA 3 pointers... maybe he should move to the corner and try to be like Shane..... but JJ had a great shot at Duke, which is taking longer than it should to translate to longer range in the NBA. Should he find that shot, he's a scary player out there at the arc... and if he starts jumping passing lanes since his defense is weak, he'd also improve considerably. They got all the pieces they really need, they just need them all to do their jobs.

January 12, 2009  01:32 PM ET

Raymond Felton for JJ Redick. (however the salaries would work is no concern for Mike, he'll get er done LOL)
Then Mike can have JJ and Morrison on the same team.

I believe the Magic, as constructed, can go deep into the playoffs and make an impact, and can challenge any team, East or West. Any upgrade they could hope to gain by trade equates to some equal subtraction from the team of a quality piece of the puzzle. If they learn to eliminate defensive lapses (concentration lulls) and shoot better free throws, they can win it all. You heard it here first.
