Patriots' Pioli all but gone to KC

06:33 AM ET 01.12 | What might have seemed like a long shot at the time - Patriots vice president of player personnel Scott Pioli running the Chiefs' football operation - is now looking more like a realistic possibility. Once thought to be the Chiefs' leading candidate, now there is no doubt: Pioli is their man, according to an NFL source. Perhaps more important, Pioli's interest in the Chiefs and a potential new career challenge has grown. All that stands in the way is hashing out a contract agreement, or perhaps a late pitch from the Patriots (who lost offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels to the Broncos yesterday as head coach), or a last-minute change of heart from Pioli. All scenarios remained in play as of early last night, but as reported in yesterday's Globe, the intensity of talks between Pioli and the Chiefs has increased within the last 24-48 hours. Word out of Kansas City continues to be that the possibility of the sides coming together is picking up momentum. The key has been the comfort level between Pioli, Hunt, and team president Denny Thum.

I wonder who he will bring in as coach?

I think its almost a done deal, but there's always the chance that he has a change of heart or decides to stick around for a last minute financial offer from New England. I still think this is a great fit for both Pioli and the Chiefs. The Chiefs get a man with en inpeccable football reputation, while Pioli gets an opportunity to run his own show with a stable franchise. This story continues to grow and I'm getting excited to see what this guy could do on his own. I just wonder if there might be any other New England staff that he might raid?
If Pioli comes to KC, who coaches next year? Josh McDaniels just agreed to join Denver & Kirk Ferentz wants to stay at Iowa until his son graduates. Would Shanahan come to KC? Would Bill Cowher pick up the phone if Chiefs' owner Clark Hunt and asked him to come back to where he was before Pittsburgh as Defensive Coordinator (would he come over with Pioli in place?)? Would Brian Billek become an option? Is there someone else the Chiefs should be looking at (Rex Ryan, Steve Spagnoula)? What do you think?

At least he'll have a lot of young talent to work with.

I think Cowher would want more control so I don't think he would come. Shanahan? Possibly to re-establish his name in the NFL... Billek? I don't know... kind of hard to imagine...\
They need a coach who can take over both sides of the ball. Unlike Denver where the offensive pieces are in place, KC has a lot of developing to do.

One of New England's assistants got made head coach of the Broncos apparently, so that rules out one potential coach he could have brought with him if he wanted to raid his soon-to-be former organization.

The article make one thing perfectly clear, he is going to KC. Or he might stay in NE. Now we are sure.

Why? Well, because Kansas City is one of the best organizations in the NFL. They are very loyal to their employees. Lots of young talent. Lots of money to spend in Free agency and they have the #3 pick. Why not?
And, for all you idiots who say..."It's Kansas City, who cares?" KC has more good people in it's city then the whole East coast states combined. I would rather have grown up in Mexico City than that hell hole of a state we call New York.

What a terrible title. I feared the worst before I read the whole thing. That would be great if Cowher came, no chance in hell though.

Nice title SI, as an antsy fan waiting on word from the powers that be, this is probably the worst title you could have put on this piece. As far as coaches, I like Spags or Ryan. I would be pretty pissed if they brought in that horse-faced Shanahan.

Props to the Chiefs for actually taking steps to make their team better. Herm would be a great assistant coach ("You PLAY to WIN the GAME") but Pioli would bring in one of his guys. It'd be cool to see them contend again, and to see Tony Gonzales get to a Bowl other than the Pro Bowl.
