The Jets have a new front-runner in their search for a head coach. Jets owner Woody Johnson and general manager Mike Tannenbaum met with Baltimore Ravens defensive coordinator Rex Ryan for five hours Sunday in Baltimore and the two sides hit it off in a big way, according to a person with knowledge of the meeting. That person spoke on the condition of anonymity because he's not authorized to speak for Ryan or the Jets. Ryan, whose 3-4 defense has forced eight turnovers in two postseason games and ranked second in the NFL this past season, also interviewed with the Rams Sunday. He's the eighth candidate interviewed by the Jets. "Rex likes the owner," the person said. "He was impressed that the owner flew down to meet with him. The Jets were very serious. I can tell you that Rex is leaning toward the Jets and the Jets are leaning toward Rex. "In fact, the Jets told Rex that they're prepared to wait until after the Super Bowl to hire him if they have to."

You can't duplicate the Baltimore 'D'. He won't have close to that much talent in NY!

Often imitated but never duplicated.

After that Bill Cowher debacle, I'm sure Woody Johnson will fly out to meet every coaching candidate.

I hope Rex Ryan gets the HC job. He deserves a shot.

HA Take that as an official insult Bill Cowher. Woody flew to meet him but was "too busy" to get with you.

lol.

SPAGS OR RYAN ARE THE OBVIOUS FRONT RUNNERS. RYAN IS A VERY INTERESTING PROSPECT THOUGH. HOPE HE GETS IT.

January 12, 2009  08:32 AM ET

I hope we hire that Boston College guy somewhere even doing laundry that was a bad beat

January 12, 2009  08:38 AM ET

With the D he helped build and coach in Baltimore, he definitely deserves a shot at the big job.

Don't leave Rex. You will just be back in Crabtown in 3 years

January 12, 2009  08:44 AM ET

Wish him well...thanks for the good times!

as long as it isn't brian shottenheimer-I am fine with Ryan or spags.

January 12, 2009  09:21 AM ET

Hey Jets should go for the Baltimore Offensive coordinator Cam Cameron.

January 12, 2009  09:36 AM ET

Rex baby...lets get this done!

January 12, 2009  11:26 AM ET

I like Rex Ryan with the J-E-T-S Jets Jets Jets. He comes from the hard-nosed Ryan family and he wont be waiting for Jet Favre to **** so he can kiss his a-double-s. And maybe he can find some talent in Vernon Gholston, God knows Vernon Gholston hasn't found any talent in Vernon Gholston yet.

Basically.........

January 12, 2009  01:44 PM ET

I hear the Jetsies are prepared to trade Brett Farve for Ray Lewis

January 12, 2009  02:00 PM ET

It seems that the Jets have interviewed 20 guys already. Rex would be a good choice. Just wondering if Woody interviewed Fireman Ed yet?

Really, If the Jets had that personal they wouldn't be looking for a head coach. Although if they did Bob Sutton would have found a way to under utilize them. ryan is the right man. the Jets have some talent but still need some work. I am one of the few who hasn't written off Gholston yet but if Ryan can't fix him he will join the likes of Blair Thomas and Ron Farout. The Jet fans will storm the castle with torches if the Jets hire Shottenhimer and I'll be one of them

Wasn't their last head coach a so called defensive coordinator genius? Perhaps they should look at the other side of the line of scrimmage this time?

What offensive cooridinator or former HC do you suggest? Pleae don't say Shanahan because not that he is a bad coach but he will want all the power and his record shows he is terrible with personal.
he hasn't won a playoff game since Elway left.

Shanahan and the Broncos beat the Patriots a couple of years back.
