Report: U.S. Marshals improperly aided Fox announcers

A lawyer for the United States Marshals Service improperly used federal vehicles and on-duty deputies to escort him to World Series games, the Super Bowl and other major sporting events where he worked as a part-time statistician for Fox Sports, according to a report made public Monday by the Inspector General of the Department of Justice. Investigators found that the lawyer, Joseph Band, also arranged for deputy marshals to provide vehicle escorts to Fox Sports announcers at two World Series games in 2007, and an N.F.L. playoff game and the Super Bowl in 2008. The report identified the broadcasters as Tim McCarver, Joe Buck and Troy Aikman. The report found that Band, whose job at the Marshals Service's Office of General Counsel included advising employees on "matters of ethics and integrity," repeatedly committed "ethical violations" in using federal resources for personal business and that he "lacked candor" when questioned by investigators.

More tax dollars being put to useful means.

what is the world coming to?

Another story to fill a void in FN postings?

January 13, 2009  08:14 AM ET

The worst announcers Buck can't live up to his dad's name and troy can't finish a sentence after his 45 concussions..........non story

Too bad the Marshal's didn't escort these guys off a cliff and do the US a service. Fox is bar none the worst channel to watch / hear sports on. When Troy Aikmen is your best game caller, well there are a lot of low cards in that hand.

Wonderful ... wasting my tax dollars to protect three of the broadcasters I despise the most. Between the three of them, they couldn't string together a decent performance.

Not only that, but what kind of former NFL quarterback needs a freakin' escort by U.S. Marshalls?? Get a life, Troy. Be a man.

January 13, 2009  08:53 AM ET

ok and why is this sports news?? The lawyer is the one in trouble, not the broadcasters... They didn't know they weren't supposed to be escorted. I bet the lawyer was trying to act like a big wig and flex is "power"...

In the immortal words of Troy Aikman, "I totally agree with you IanIJM01".. seriously, can Aikman give any commentary more insightful than "I totally agree" or "you're exactly right".

Oh yeah, let me guess, you think Madden is the king of commentary, right?

Aikman is great at what he does and it's only the fellow rival NFC East fans that hold a grudge and can't get past his dominance in the 90's.

January 13, 2009  09:54 AM ET

Joe Buck is a tool.

January 13, 2009  09:55 AM ET

what costs the taxpayer more: The escorts to the game or prosecuting this guy. this is retarded who cares the govt writes blank checks all the time

January 13, 2009  09:56 AM ET

I also like Troy Aikman as an announcer.

I'm from Dallas and to be honest, I'm not impressed with Aikman. There are certainly worse announcers though.

What still amazes me is how Madden is still thought so highly of. He has made Madden videogames to where the option to turn off his rambling is mandatory.

Completely disagree. Buck is really good.

January 13, 2009  10:37 AM ET

Gee, a crooked lawyer wasting tax dollars for personal gain. What are the odds!?

January 13, 2009  10:37 AM ET

As scandals go.. this is pretty far down on the list.

January 13, 2009  11:26 AM ET

String this dude up by his toes. Seriously, where is the **** accountability in this country. Start putting these A'holes in prison.

January 13, 2009  11:27 AM ET

Aikman will be the first robot inducted into the broadcast HOF

The guy whose job "included advising employees on "matters of ethics and integrity," repeatedly committed "ethical violations"" .... I love the irony.
