How Giants may replace Plaxico

Eli Manning has attempted to keep in touch with Plaxico Burress, but his cell phone voice mail is always full and Burress never returns any of his text messages. He's had no contact with him since the night Burress shot himself in the thigh in late November. But Manning sent a message to Burress and Giants management Monday: He wants his No. 1 receiver back next season. The Giants know they can't count on Burress, even if GM Jerry Reese has been giving the impression the Giants would take him back if he works his way out of his legal troubles. Reese will look at free agency, where Cincinnati's T.J. Houshmandzadeh is the most accomplished player on the list. He will look at trades. Arizona's Anquan Boldin has been unhappy about his contract and he would certainly be worth a first-round pick if he forces his way out. And it's a strong draft for wide receivers, with underclassmen Michael Crabtree (Texas Tech), Kenny Britt (Rutgers), Darrius Heyward-Bey (Maryland) and Jeremy Maclin (Missouri) already declaring. Florida's Percy Harvin has until the Thursday deadline to make up his mind.

The Giants have three picks in the first two rounds. If you can get Boldin, you go after him. If not Houshmandzadeh . Drafting WRs is a risky business. Burress may be in jail and at the least will be suspended by the league for at least four games. You sign Jacobs, and go in to next year with a very competitive team. Reese is a very bright man, he will make the right decisions.

I'm okay with this article up until "Michael Crabtree". There is no way he'll fall to the Giants.

tj will not hit free agency, he will be resigned for sure. bouldin will not be traded either. as far as the draft, when its the giants pick the number 1 WR will most certainly be gone. maclin may be there or he may not. those two WR's are the best in the draft the other guys are "good" but wont be anywhere near ready to make the impact that crabman and maclin will.

If a football team is so dependent on one receiver, then they have some bigger issues. Like lack of leadership.

January 13, 2009  07:46 AM ET

Eli shouldn't be sending any messages to Giants leadership about the people he wants back. If he would have hit his receivers when they were open Sunday, the Giants would be preparing for the NFC Championship this week. He should put his cell phone down and try throwing a football through a tire for about 4 months this off-season.

January 13, 2009  07:51 AM ET

Eli should stop trying to general manage the team - if he would have hit his current batch of receivers when they were open on Sunday, the Giants would be preparing for the NFC Championship right now. His performance was absolutely embarrassing. He needs to put down the cell phone and pick up a football - try throwing about 10,000 passes through a tire over the off-season.

Im tired of the NY bias in all these reports let's hear some real news like what is Pittsburgh's plan against that Baltimore defense or Andy Reid and what made him look like a walrus.

Agreed. Reese is a smart GM, needs to come to Dallas and replace Skeletor.

Don't know Pittsburgh's plan but suspect Andy Reid's condition is caused by overeating.
