Will Belichick call Patriots plays?

The Patriots are in the market for a new offensive coordinator, as Josh McDaniels has agreed to terms on a contract to become the Denver Broncos' new head coach. As for how the Patriots, who are scheduled to play the Broncos in 2009, will fill the void, the rest of the offensive coaching staff consists of running backs coach Ivan Fears, tight ends coach Pete Mangurian, receivers coach Bill O'Brien, and offensive line coach Dante Scarnecchia. Of that group only Mangurian has held the title of offensive coordinator in the NFL, in 2003 with the Falcons. O'Brien was offensive coordinator at Georgia Tech in 2001-02 and at Duke in 2006. Coach Bill Belichick presumably would prefer to promote from within, because the team isn't likely to alter its system and a coordinator coming from another team likely would take time to adjust to the Patriots' way. It's also possible Belichick could take a more active role in play-calling.

More than likely that Matt Cassell will do they play calling and earn his $14m after they franchise him, and Brady comes back.

Maybe they should trade for T.O. That would make the play calling very simple.

This coach is like really stupid and the players are what brought the team the titles.....Brady, Vinateri and some other that I really cannot name......and they did cheat really good too.

A well thought out, well researched statement. Thank you for that.

BB will find someone to work the offense for him. He still spends a large portion of his game days with the defense.

Randy Moss and T.O. on the same team. Never going to happen.

how is he going to be able to call plays running the offense? who would that leave to work the video cameras?

January 13, 2009  08:02 AM ET

He will call plays only if he sees what the other team is running first because he is the biggest cheater in the NFL and he needs to figure out that the only reason his team is any good is because of Brady.

Why would he do anything differently? He will bring in someone he believes in and do as he has always done. He has been in the NFL for over 20 years. The man always has a plan.

Exactly and don't be surprised if Mike Shanahan isn't on the Patriots sideline next season calling the plays.
