Is Spagnuolo next Giants coach?
If either the Jets or the Detroit Lions offers Steve Spagnuolo its head coaching job, there may be nothing the Giants can do to prevent their defensive coordinator from leaving. Unless they're willing to name him their head coach, too. Giants GM Jerry Reese said Monday the team would consider making Spagnuolo a "head coach-in-waiting" if it would keep him from leaving for another team. It would be an unprecedented move by the Giants, but since Tom Coughlin's current contract expires in 2011 when he will be 65, they could promise Spagnuolo the job would be his then.

Wait, you're already looking to replace that won a Super Bowl last year, won his division this year, and the first seed, and probably would go back to the SB if it weren't for Plax shooting himself???

There is no reason for the Giants to upset Tom Coughlin's tenure. No one even knows if Spags could handle a Head Coach position.

Because it is the Jets and the Lions...neither of which are decent job opportunities.

Wait a few years and pass up on some big bucks? Drop 'em Spags, take the dough and go to the Lions. you will be a hero if you win 4 games next year. And when the big 3 automakers go down the tubes, the Lions will move to some city with some cash. Take the money, screw the Giants.

But odds are you go to the Lions and have 3 non-playoff seasons and you don't get another head coaching job for the next 10 years. Head coaches don't get 2nd chances. Neither the Lions or Jets job is too attractive right now. Jets have QB issues. Major ones. Lions were 0-16.

Exactly! Don't pass up a chance at that kind of money and if you turn that sorry franchise around there will be more $ where that came from!

If he goes to the Lions and wins 3 games, they'll hail him as Detroit's Vince Lombardi. And the Jets have QB issues, no worse than 10 other teams in the league. Either one would be a good job, and Spags would be a good coach.
BTW, it says Tom Coughlin will be 65 in 2011. I would have guessed he was in his 80s right now.

The difference between good coaches and great coaches is that good coaches win championships, great coaches win championships AND check their players sweat pants for firearms.

If it really is just about the money, like some of you here suggest, then he should get the bucks he feels he deserves from the Giants and stay put, rather than agree to coach pitiful teams and organizations like the Jets and Lions.

Spag's is a smart enough guy to know you have to take advantage of you're opportunities today because there's just no way of knowing what tomorrow will bring. So I expect Spag's will move on and take it even if it's the Lion's or the Jets.

The Rams made this mistake years ago when they forced Dick Vermeil into an early retirement so they could give the job to a hotshot coordinator named Mike Martz. The Giants should be happy with Coughlin, and let Spagnuolo move on somewhere else.
