Rams' mystery candidate is...

Jason Garrett, the assistant head coach-offensive coordinator of the Dallas Cowboys, is the so-called "mystery" candidate in the Rams' head-coaching search, league sources told the Post-Dispatch on Monday. Barring an unexpected complication, Garrett will interview Wednesday in Los Angeles as one of the Ram's finalist interviews. According to league sources, the Rams have settled in on five finalists: current Rams coach Jim Haslett already has taken part in his finalist interview last week in L.A.; Minnesota assistant head coach-defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier is scheduled to interview there Tuesday; and it has now been confirmed that Steve Spagnuolo of the New York Giants will interview in Los Angeles on Thursday. (The Giants have granted St. Louis permission to speak to Spagnulo.) The fifth finalist is Baltimore assistant head coach-defensive coordinator Rex Ryan. The only reason why Ryan was interviewed in Baltimore Sunday instead of in Los Angeles is because the Ravens are still alive in the NFL playoffs. Whether the Rams can afford to wait on Ryan, particularly if the Ravens win Sunday, remains to be seen.

Bye Jason. Good luck. Have a great career. Gonna miss you. Help you pack? Don't miss that flight.

I'd question Jason Garrett's ability to head coach. His offense dropped hard when Tony Sparano left. If he can't keep the offense going, how could he run a team?

Shhh. We know. We're just hoping other teams don't realize it.

they can have him!

January 13, 2009  07:31 AM ET

The real mystery is why he is ANYONE'S candidate for a head coaching job right now.

January 13, 2009  07:56 AM ET

I thought you Cowboy fans would be sad to see Garrett go!

January 13, 2009  07:58 AM ET

Good news is that he really can't make then any worse!

January 13, 2009  08:15 AM ET

too many coaching vacancies with not alot of time before the draft you are going to see most of them filled this week.

this site has alot of hiccups today

Goodbye! Now or next thing to do is to get rid of T.O. and Patrick Crayton.

The next time I see a Cowboys fan ripping an Eagles fan for being "fairweather", I'm going to point them to this Jason Garrett situation.

Last year the guy was just another in the many string of "geniuses", "superstars", and "future Hall of Famers" on the Cowboys. Now, after the team crapped all over itself, you can't wait to run him out of town.

Sounds vaguely familiar ....

The answer: because the Rams don't have much of a clue.

I don't think the Rams are going to go down the road of hiring another offensive coordinator. They've been there and done that twice in a row with Mike Martz and Scott Linehan. I think the job is Rex Ryan's if he wants it. (GM Billy Devaney really likes him from when he interviewed for the Falcons' job a year ago.) If Ryan goes somewhere else, then it would go to Spagnuolo. If neither of those guys take the job, then I think they stick with Haslett.

How can any Cowboys fan question fandom when they are the most bandwagonnedest (totally made that word up) in sports.

Yeah.. aas if the Rams are a plum coaching job.

It's time to put up or shut up. Remember he spent his entire NFL career holding clip boards and listening to coach's, some pretty good one's at that. He deserves a shot
