Canadiens-Lightning deal in works?

The Vincent Lecavalier situation had the hockey world buzzing yesterday, especially after a report suggested the Lightning might be looking to cut payroll for the survival of their financially strapped franchise. While Lightning general manager Brian Lawton has denied shopping his stud forward, word around the league is that the team has been taking inquiries. A TSN report suggested a Canadiens offer would include Tomas Plekanec, Chris Higgins, prospect P.K. Subban, Josh Gorges and a package of draft picks including more than one first-round pick. Habs general manager Bob Gainey was coy when asked about the potential of Lecavalier coming to Montreal, a scenario reported by a Montreal radio station last week.

before I comment on this, is the Sun a real newspaper, or is it a Rupert Murdoch rag?
If there is veracity to this, it could be a good thing for Montreal.
And although Coach Renney in NY has been preaching about team chemistry, I think St. Louis would be a good add for The Rangers if the could get him

January 13, 2009  08:05 AM ET

Lecavalier would be a great add to the team, but not for more that price. Plekanec is a contributor, Higgins is a contributor, P.K. Subban is a great prospect, Josh Georges, well whatever... and more then 1 first round pick??? Montreal would be mortgaging their future on 1 guy??? the value isn't there.

Spiny its is a Canadian rag...lots of bs with no back up. Lots of "unnamed sources".

January 13, 2009  08:42 AM ET

If you can get Lecavalier for these guys mentioned, it is a steal. Montreal is deep enough to send these players away and Lecavalier is exactly what the Habs need : a big, strong horse that can play physically in the middle and lead them in the postseason. Montreal is far too small up the middle to seriously compete for the Cup, and Vinny would bolster their chances in a serious way.

Thhis would be a slam dunk for Montreal.

January 13, 2009  08:49 AM ET

Seems like a lot to give up for Vinny, but it would make Montreal a very very good team.

January 13, 2009  09:27 AM ET

vinny is one of my favorite players in the league and if he was dealt to montreal i would be really really sad. that being said, why aren't the rangers in this mix? they desperately need a proven goalscorer IN HIS PRIME who they can count on game in and game out. dubinsky, redden, dawes, and a draft pick? sather needs to get something done that's all i know

January 13, 2009  09:52 AM ET

Good luck with that

January 13, 2009  10:39 AM ET

There is no other place Vinnie should go. Montreal has not had a high flying Frenchman since Guy Lafleur.

He has been undermarketed in Tampa and while the pressure to play in Montreal would be great it will pay off for him in the long run.

Lecavalier to the Bruins for Sturm.

You sir are a nut! :) Is there anybody you don't think Strum should be drafted for?

January 13, 2009  11:48 AM ET

hey bostongm. sturm might be out for the year, im sure that's wat tampa bay is looking for

January 13, 2009  12:08 PM ET

If he is dealt, 90% sure it will be the Habs. Gainey will **** backwards to get him and they have to make a run at the Cup this year, being the 100th anniversary of the Habs.

Guy Latendresse isn't doing it for you, Hank?

January 13, 2009  12:55 PM ET

I don't care where he goes, as long as it doesn't have palm trees and an average attendance of 6,000. This guy needs to go to a big market team, and I can't think of a better fit than Montreal. He would be a god down there...But that is a lot of young talent and draft picks to give up for one guy, but as well all know, Vinny is easily one of the most dominant players in the league....and will be for the next few years....

I couldn't agree more joec. That 100 year anniversary seems to be everything to that franchise. I bet Gainy would sell his children if it guaranteed him Vinny. And as far as the Lightning, move the team up north already.

Why on earth would the Lightning want that package with Redden from the Rangers? Just because Sather was dumb enough to give Redden that deal does not mean that Tampa will take him. Take Redden out and put Staal in and then they might talk to you.

I would hate to see Montreal get Vinny and I agree he is a big strong guy with enormous offensive talent, but to suggest he plays a physical game? I haven't seen it yet. He reminds me of "No Show Joe" Thornton. Great talent, just kinda soft for a big guy.

January 13, 2009  02:41 PM ET

Vinny will drop the gloves. In fact I think a bit too much? Didn't he have to be told to be less physically involved?

In no way can he be compared to Thornton other than they are big centres who play hockey.

January 13, 2009  03:06 PM ET

As a lifetime Montreal fan it is time to get the superstar that the Habs have been missing since Lafleur. As much as I hated watching the Lightning and Lecavalier take down the Habs in the playoffs during their Stanley Cup run, I would love to see him play in his hometown. He could weahter the pressure of the fans and the press in Montreal unlike that pint size chicken Daniel Briere. Most importantly it would mean a great shot at knocking the Bruins on their **** in the playoffs.....again.

January 13, 2009  03:41 PM ET

If Gainey makes the trade, the Canadiens won't give up all those guys and draft picks for him. Consider the source for a moment. Maybe an established player, a top prospect and a first-round pick or two high-round ones. The Canadiens would also need assurance that Vinny's shoulder won't cause him problems down the stretch. Would he fit in Montreal? Sure, he has enough talent to fit just about anywhere and the locals would treat him as a god. More importantly however, and no-one here has mentioned it, does he want to go there? Gainey should sit down with him and find out before making any deals.

Sorry, not this year. Should be a good game tonight! Tell Komisarek he doesn't have to pretend to be injured, Lucic has a real Boo Boo and probably won't play.
